oil leak???
 

I've been catching some threads noticing that a lot of people have leaks from their oil pans. Just noticed that mine is leaking a little and there's oil in the are of the oil pan. I say area b/c it's all freakin over. Not a lot but enought to coat. Anything else prone to oil leaks, obviously besides my rebuilt piece of crap turbos that I need to replace (lol). Just curious. Any different approaches on getting that sucker sealed tight?

The front covers are prone to leaking and are not easy to fix.

I was able to solve that problem once from the inside out - using a floor jack, I raised the motor high enough to remove the oil pan.

Once the oil pan and oil pick-up tube are removed, you can manuver around inside the front cover - I cleaned all the oil off using carb cleaner, let it sit over night to air dry the insides, recleaned with carb cleaner, re air dried, then used a high-temp seal. Worked like a charm.

Rear oil seals and motor mounts are also prone to oil leaks.

And the turbos' oil lines..

The easiest way I found to actually **isolate** where the oil is leaking from in the first place:


Raise the car up via lift or jack stands.

really clean the underside using whatever you like, but make sure it is surgery room clean :D Degreaser and a power washer work wonders here.

While the car is still up on the lift or on the jackstands, start the car, and let it idle for awhile. Perhaps even rev it up a bit to get the oil pressure up.


Slide back underneath the car avoiding that !hot downpipe! and see where the oil is spewing forth.


Another option is a dye kit you can buy from auto parts stores. Essentially it's an additive that shows up under black light, I believe. Dump it in your oil, run the car a few miles, and under the black light - TAAA-DA!

But the same thing applies - you need to clean the underside of the car in order to help facilitate the oil trace.

Hmmm, both good ideas I'm going to have to get something worked out. Not leaking a lot but shouldn't be leaking at all. Thanks
