oil cooler failure

So, newly rebuilt engine just went in, drove it around the block, came back home, let it cool down, started it up again for more testing, bam! oil instantly dumping below my oil cooler (single cooler on a touring model). A quart or so in less than 30 seconds from the time we saw it.

My question is, what is the common mode of failure for stock oil coolers. I didnt take everything apart yet to check to see what happened, but what is the likely cause? If you are looking from the front of the car, the oil accumulation seems to be on the left hand side of the oil cooler.

Ideas?

well i dont relly knowif the oil coolers are similar to the fc. but i had the ame prob. and later after replacing the washer found out that the lines themselfs were faulty, i called mazda and each hose was like 140 sumthing for one and the other was like 200 sumthing. so i just bough some steel braided ones for like 180., but anyways...
uhmm clean the oil cooler till you cant really see no more oil and start the car and kinda rev the car to build oil press and see where the leak is coming from. hope it helps..

You've had to of had a clip not properly installed on the hose joint during engine reassembly. And a very lucky individual to have it happen in the driveway.

ok, turns out one of the clips is MISSING. So, i searched, and these clips are apparently no longer available according to this thread https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ght=oil+cooler Where can i buy replacements? The ones in tha thread apparently dont work correctly.

called malloy mazda....the clips are NOT available for individual purchase anymore. Instead you have to buy that entire fitting and it comes with the clip for ~ 25$. Most expensive damn C clip ever. They used to sell for 7$ individually. DO NOT LOSE THESE LIKE I DID! Big thanks to Ray for helping me out though.
