Official Cheap (but good) Mods Thread

Alright, I have spent as much money as I can right now, but I want to keep making my car better and better. Right now I am going to put a grounding system on, home made, the $15 style. My question what other mods can be done to help car performance, reliability, power, and overheating problems without spending tons of money?

turbojeff 07-26-04 07:57 PM

New thermostat, $9.

Engine that doesn't overheat due to $9 part:

Priceless.

legal-z 07-26-04 08:14 PM

there's a miata thermoswitch on the 3rd gen parts board right now. one of the better cheap mods.

good fuel is the best mod.

i agree that jap tuners are excellent, but the fact they work with 110ron fuel helps a bit ;)

Budget? Haha, nothing. Just whenever I come across a bit of money I spend it on the 7. I am just looking for future ideas of stuff to do.

TainoIndian 07-26-04 09:16 PM

Wow, someone mentioned cheap, and here I am.

Since this is the Official Cheap mod thread, it must include cheap mods that Dex Mex doesn't need on his car. Of course, I have to mention the Cheap Bastard intake. It works as well or better than the expensive cold air intakes at a fraction of the cost. It also passes smog (visual and sniff tests) :)

The Home Depot boost controller is also a great cheap mod.

Cheap way to decrease coolant temps:

Miata thermoswitch and home made radiator ducting. 80% water / 20% coolant mix.

When you say thermoswitch is that the same as the thermostat? I'm getting ready to replace some radiator hoses soon and I might as well do that to while I'm doing it.

No. The thermoswitch is in the of the coolant neck and signals the ecu to switch the fans to high speed. The Miata part is a direct replacement (connector is different; you'll have to splice) that switches the fans to high sooner.

novadan67 07-27-04 11:28 AM

In addition to those already mentioned...

Boost gauge ~ $50
Temp gauge ~ $50 or linearize stock guage for < $10
99 Spec Tail light conversion ~ $30
Upgrade to PIAA or Silverstars ~ $50
Ebay strut bar < $20 shipped

How smart is that? And when he gets a flat one day he's going to wish he had the spare and jack instead of having to throw away $100+ on having the car towed.

apex_sideway 07-27-04 12:36 PM

Speed Bleeders and Fumoto oil drain valve= my first cheap mods for convinence . . . . 60$ total :D

I have not done it to my car, but many people have - probably for less than $30. Here is a link:
