OEM replacement brake rotors with aluminum hats?
Hey guys -
I seem to remember seeing OEM-type replacement rotors (for use with stock calipers and pads) that had an aluminum hat in the center to save weight. Been Googling around without much luck. Anyone know a source? Again, this is NOT for a big brake kit, or upgrading to big brakes, just dropping weight on the stock setup. Dale |

Try calling coleman racing. They do make custom rotors/hats and all they need is an OEM rotor for dimensions. Keep us posted.

Well did some looking around and it seems like you're in for $800 or so for a pair. Just not cost effective.

Got mine many years ago from KVRperformance.com. No longer offered on their website though. FWIW, there was a 4lb weight reduction in the front and 3lbs in the rear.

Yeah, I looked at the Project Mu rotors, it's about $530. Don't know if that's for a pair or for one, though - some of the JDM rotors specifically say it's EACH.
DJF, thanks for the weight saving info! Is that 4lb total on the front or for each rotor? I believe stock rotors are 15 pounds. 4 pounds per corner is killer, 2 pounds is good but not amazing :). Dale |
Dale, sorry for the delay....yes, that's a 4lb weight reduction for each rotor at the front and the same, respectively at the rear.

A group buy was done years ago for 99 spec size 2-piece rotors for the rear. I think the front was also made but I only bought the rears to go with Stop Tech fronts. Company was Prevision Rotor but I think they've changed owners.

This is great news. I need this set up for an ASP autocross application. I checked the RB link to their website. It says the front disc is 2mm thicker than OEM and that the OEM caliper needs to be widened to compensate. RB or anyone, can you provide details as to how this is best done? Or can the disc be cut 1 mm on each side if not concerned about longevity and want to reduce weight and/or have clearance issues with a wider caliper.

TIA, Philip RB offers 1pc and 2pc stock replacement, OE caliper BBK (for RS upgrade) and caliper kits. It was the most popular and successful brake upgrade in Subaru history still is today extending to FRS/BRZ. Since it's proven design so e see no sense to make a 22mm (thinner) disc just for RX7, nor we think a thinner rotor is a good idea for someone who want to track their car (eg. RX8 stock is 322x24). Thicker rotor provides extra thermal capacity to keep the braking temperature lower and can extend the life of your brake system (less replacement on pad, rotor, brake fluid etc.) This modification can be easily done with a dremel (See the same mod. we offer for Viper G3/4/5 big rotor kit 370x34mm vs. OE 355x32mm). OE caliper width is 25.5mm, we recommend it be widened to about 27mm for a 24mm rotor (remove 0.75mm per side) to avoid rotor/caliper interference when corning. OE calipers are OK but after more than 20 years it shows the age and out-of- date design, so for those who are seriously looking for more efficient set up, stiff yer compact enough to fit under 16" wheels, here is what we have to offer.

Radial mount vs. axial mount, all these contribute to a more stiff caliper operation for less taper wear and higher braking efficiency. Also RB caliper is slimmer and requires less axial clearance to clear the wheel spokes. Other construction details such as threaded pad pins (instead of OE's cotter pins) and pad hold down spring and tension springs (4 corners) can assure tight pad fitment with caliper for a smooth and efficient brake set up. |
RB 2pc rotor can save you 3.6 lbs per rotor even thicker by 2mm.
