odometer replacement on FD?
 

Serious question, I am in the process of restoring my FD to a factory new codition. The exterior is going to repainted next week and then I will do some touchup to the interior.

once I have my car redone I would like to replace the odometer in the car, It may sound a bitt odd but I think it would be cool to start with my 'new' car. I have no plans to sell the car and I own it outright. Is it legal to do this and if so other than the factory where can I get an odometer/speedo replacement.

Well the short answer is no. Its no legal. I see your reasoning but if you are caught for odometer fraud there are some nice fines attached Im sure. I thought about doing this on my honda when I was about to buy a new motor but I decided Id rather stay out of trouble. Chances are youll get away with it but your vin number has everything. The next time you go to emissions, they scan your vin, and see that the last time it had xxxxxx miles and now your odometer says xx you are screwed. Just a heads up, Id steer clear of that idea. =]

Actaully (in NY) it's not illegal unless you try to sell the car and don't disclose it's true mileage. The title will be branded TMU (Total Mileage Unknown) and it will have the same value as a salvage car. If you plan on keeping the car forever go for it! Otherwise I would leave it alone.

Well I know my car fax report has the history of my car mileage, cause I pulled it before I bought it. Its not a big deal even if I keep the original. But I cant see it being against the law, what do you do when the odometer stops working?

Maybe I will just forget about the idea, no big deal.

It's NOT illegal at all. You can purchase a new odomoter from your local dealer, or you can even purchase a Mazdaspeed version, or a Japanese market Odometer. The only catch is that you have to fill out a form from the dealer, they will then verify the mileage on your car, and then certify the switch. This will give you proof, if you ever sell your car. I would definately make sure you have all the paperwork needed, and make sure to get photocopies of EVERYTHING, in case you ever want to sell the car. This will make it much easier to explain to a buyer.
