Odometer numbers out - running out of ideas...

I've searched and tried just about everything.

I've replaced the capacitors on speedo like several people have done on here. That didnt work, all illuminations in the cluster still worked, the back light still worked, no numbers.

I recently got a brand new speedo unit from Ray. I installed that tonight, and again, no numbers on the brand new unit.

Am I missing something? The engine is not in the car and the harness is removed from the ECU, but that shouldn't matter, right? I was under the impression the numbers should display even if the cluster isnt in the car. Ugh.

If anyone can give any help i'd appreciate it. I don't know what to do next, can't seem to fix this issue. I really hope its something stupid I'm missing so I can get on with this project.

you need your engine mine does this too when my car isn't started.

Man, I hope you didn't buy a new speedo ....

The engine ground on the engine wiring harness has to be grounded for the odometer to work. It's part of that circuit.

The old speedo COULD have had problems, but without that ground hooked up you'll always get nuttin'.

Unfortunatly I did.

The worst part is the engine is sitting on the stand complete and ready to go back in, I was waiting for the weekend (and the last few small parts that came in the order with the speedo) to put it back in.

I guess it could be worse, at least now I have a "zero mile" FD, even tho my pockets are $500 lighter for no reason.

Thanks for restoring my sanity guys.

Major :facepalm4: on my part. Kids don't do like I did, fix one thing at a time, not everything at once. When you try to fix everything at once you "fix" things that arn't broken :icon_no2:

There are 2 grounds, one bolt to the manifold near the firewall and one bolt to the coil bracket, probably one of those.

I'm interested to know where exactly this ground is as well, my mileage doesn't show up all the time after I have worked on the car with the battery disconnected. Often I have to disconnect the battery ground and reconnecting it a couple times for the mileage to reappear.

If memory serves, I believe the correct ground is the one to the coil bracket. I personally ran a supplementary ground from my cluster to a ground in the cabin. If you follow the soft board on your cluster it's easy to find which spot is the ground. I believe I posted a picture of it as well in a thread somewhere.
