Odometer Display Burned out?

1 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone, I know a lot of you have experienced the odometer not coming on, but have any of you ever seen one burn out like this? At least I think the display burned out. I don't know. It has been in the garage with no battery hooked up to it for a while now. The other day I went to take it for a spin, and I noticed the display looks like it does in the picture. It still lights up behind it, but that's it. Also, strangely, my tach and speedometer have quit working as well. It could just be a coincidence.

Power surge that fried your cluster maybe? Check your alternator, the voltage regulators can go out due to engine bay heat.

I've seen a few pictures of clusters that have this problem. To correct it you would need a new LCD soldered onto the speedometer circuit board. As far as I know, no one has identified the manufacturer of the LCD. I've been looking and have tried to figure it out, but so far I haven't been successful due to a lack of markings. I'm also not sure how easy it would be to replace it. There are 44 solder joints to remove, clean and re-solder.

This is from a spare JDM cluster I have that I have been playing around with.

Thanks guys. I'm just going to have to take it all out and start inspecting everything. Finding that lcd looks like it's going to a job in itself.

I'd buy a cheap JDM speedo & swap the LCD out.

^Yep. There's far more potential to just end up with a smoking pile of nothing for all your work.

You can also transfer your odometer reading over, read my thread on the topic.

IF you feel comfortable with soldering electronics, the capacitors are really cheap.
I bought the entire set of replacement ones for like $5.
Plenty of Great threads on how to do it and most examples have your same symptons,
dead odometer, followed by speedo and tach. Likely next thing will be a CEL code 6 for the
speedo sensor.

Search and you'll find some detailed photo by photo instructions.

Yeah, I ordered a few capacitors the other day, and I just got them in. I'm gonna practice on my soldering before I attempt to replace everything. Thanks for all the help guys.

my odometer lights up but no numbers are displayed. I've seen a thread on how to fix it but too lazy. :)

Dale can you put a link up please?

I had the same burned out speedo problem. It turned out being much easier to pick up a used cluster ($150) and swap in the whole speedo than find the elusive LCD screen.
