not starting

the rundown is I bought this car and the engine all apart in plastic bins. I put the engine together and it's not even making a pop while cranking.. I have fuel cause the down pipe smells like a gas station. I pulled the leading plug to check spark and I'm getting that.

any ideas on what way to go? Thanks in advance.... I'll get a video going

Did you do a compression test? What are the numbers?

Just to clarify, you're trying to diagnose a no start issue with a newly assembled engine? As in, you're going for the first start and it's not starting?

hey cr-rex, yes that's what's going on here.. so alot of stuff going on... I bought the car as a shell and it's been sitting for 10 years.. I changed the fuel pump and added fresh gas. I'm gonna do the 08 starter mod tomorrow... might get better compression results that way.. when i get better results or atleast a pop when i add starter fluid I'm gonna figure out why my injectors arn't grounding... I checked Trailing spark and I'm getting that.. I didn't check for leading though....

I did compression and getting 55psi on front and rear on all faces using a standard piston compression tester with the valve removed. It just doesn't want to start. I changed out the starter for a rx-8 starter and although im getting much faster cranks it still doesnt make a pop or anything

I took off all spark plugs and blew out what ever was inside of the engine and tried cranking it over with a bit of starter fluid. It instantly started to hickup and buck then it came to life for just a second!!!! it's far from anything but this is a pivotal moment for me..... I'm now gonna move onto why my injectors arn't grounding out.... but as of now I'm really, really happy!

I had a similar issue with my last rebuild. Compression was ~50 psi. The only way that I could get it to start was by pouring atf in the housings. I've pulled the motor since then and am rebuilding it again to find out why the compression was so bad.

You can put a bit of atf in the housings by lifting the uim (5 bolts connecting it to the lim and one at the tb) and pouring a bit down the intake runners on the lim.
