Is this normal operation for the airpump?

First I'll go with my set up. Car is pretty much stock. It has a down pipe and cat back. I just installed a M2 cold air intake. I'm familiar with the "moo" sound the intake makes.

My question is, is it normal for the airpump to disengage after you let off the throttle. When I open the throttle and then let off, I noticed the airpump disengages for a second then engages. I never noticed it do that with the stock intake. It also makes a squeaking sound when it desengages. I've had the M2 intake installed in prior FD's, but I never noticed this. Is this normal?

Any help would be appreciated.

The airpump turns on and off at odd times, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you have a lot of "moo" search on my user name for my anti-moo solution. $2 at the hardware store, works great.

The air pump supplies air to your catalytic converter at low rpms. By supplying more air the cat reaches optimum operating temperature to scrub the exhaust of CO and Nitrogen emissions at lower engine speeds. The air pump has an electronic clutch that is set to release at 3200 rpm and in turn cause the air pump to stop pumping--the reasoning being that the higher rpms and elevated exhaust temps now enable the cat to reach optimum temperature on its own. Thus, your air pump will disengage at 3200 and above, and re-engaged as the rpms drop.

Thanks for the info guys. It all makes sense now. The squeaking sound was coming from the hose next to the air pump hose. I never noticed it before.

I just searched the 3rd gen forum for anti-moo and came up with nothing. Anyone have the link on that?
