Noise when revving engine
 

I ran my car hot with low oil. now its making some weird friction noise when i rev the engine.

ANy ideas?

Change the oil, do a compression test. That's about the best thing I can offer to assess if there is damage.

Also change the oil and check for metal in the old oil.

Why would you do that?


Can you describe the friction noise better? Does the engine struggle to rev? Does it sound like metal on metal rubbing? Maybe a loud clicking under the hood?

it sounds like it could be the turbo. The noise itself is is like an extra frictiony turbo sound.

I was wincing every time you revved the engine.

One easy way to locate the noise would be to hold a long screwdriver on the areas where the noise seems to be coming from and put your ear on the end. You will be able to hear the noise louder the closer you get to the source. If its the power steering pump going out, you will hear the noise much louder with the screwdriver on the PS pump than if it was on the UIM. You will obviously need the engine running, and you will need to put the screwdriver onto metal for this to be effective.

I would change the oil and check for metal as others have indicated, and maybe pop open the oil filter to check for metal there as well. Check your PS fluid level while your in there too.

oil was fine thank god. i just switch to synthetic and it runs good on it.

The noise is probably unrelated to you oil temp or level then. Follow the method I described above. It may take a while, but you should be able to narrow down you noise issue. You could also try running the engine without the accessory belts attached to see if the noise persists. If it stops, its a good bet that the bearings are going out on one of your accessories.

Don't run the engine for long with those belts disconnected. I would keep it under a minute or so. You should know right away anyways.
