No airbag for 93 models?? Is this true???

hi, I'm looking into getting 93 rx-7 and i read at edmunds.com that 93 rx-7 has no passenger side airbag. is this true or just misprint??(yes, i searched) If this is, I won't be getting a 93 rx-7 because I don't want my passenger to get hurt because of no airbag. Thanx in advance.

Pumped 03-30-02 01:48 AM

yes it is true, 93 only have driver's air bag and NO passenger air bag

billvp 03-30-02 01:51 AM

hmmm, I could have sworn that my friend's '93 R1 has both, but I'll have to check on that

jasonsr1 03-30-02 02:10 AM

The 93 FD did not come with passenger side air bag.

daze 03-30-02 02:13 AM

just drive save nothing will happen.

If you crash an fd chances are you're not gonna survive it...that's just reality. It's not steel. Plus if you're gonna drive a sports car you better know the risks

what are fds made out of? i know their hoods are aluminum...is everything else aluminum also?

JoeD 03-30-02 02:29 AM

if you want airbags, get a Volvo, Mercedes, or Lexus.

if you want a sports car....

no offense, but if you are worried about safety and how many airbags the car has....the FD is not for you.

Rookie84 03-30-02 02:40 AM

Well, i know sports cars are dangerous, but if i get into an accident and my passenger dies or something because of no airbag, and i survive because of an airbag, i don't think i can live with that. I'll look for 94 or 95. Thanx.

WTF are you talking about? Have you seen crash statistics for FDs? A lot of people have had severe accidents on the forum and they lived to tell the tale. The chassis and body on FDs is steel. The only aluminum body panel is the hood. I don't know why the FD would have a worse injury profile than any other small, lightweight car (like a Honda Civic), other than the fact that accidents might occur at a higher speed. :)

BTW, most higher end cars today use aluminum body panels to reduce weight. In fact the Audi A8 is entire aluminum, even the chassis. So were Porsche 928s if I'm not mistaken. Hell, a certain popular sports car I'm thinking of has all fiberglass body panels.....

In the new option2 mag they have a whole body of the nsx made of carbonfiber, now thats cool. ;)

maxcooper 03-30-02 04:04 AM

I've seen a couple of FDs get totalled at the track, and the drivers walked away from both of them unharmed. One of them even took the car out and ran it again a few times that same day. Lots of people on this forum have crashed their FDs, too. I think they are actually pretty safe cars. They have a pretty strong B-pillar for roll-over, for instance.

It's not that they are built solid...it's the fact that the cars reach high speeds.

billvp 03-30-02 04:25 AM

what was their crash test rating?

RecKleSs 03-30-02 08:07 AM

I removed my air bag, because my steering wheel was so fuckin' ugly. :hahaha: If you are extremely worried about someone getting hurt in an accident then you should definitely buy a pair of 5 point harnesses. ;)

You take that risk every time someone is in your car no matter what you drive, some higher or lower risk than others, but the risk is still there...... I removed my airbag out of my '93 with the Efini steering wheel :D the price we pay for our toys :p:

airbag safety.........

Airbags are unsafe, use your damn seatbelt! Do you see airbags installed on any form of race car? No, because drivers are restrained by belts.

Airbags detonate with 1200 lbs of force at speeds that can exceed 200 mph. Knowing how to protect yourself and your passengers can help you prevent unnecessary injuries or even deaths. Until "safe" airbags are developed and installed and proven, you need to protect yourself. Currently, NHTSA has given the car companies until 2006 to provide these airbags, but since there is still no agreement on what a "safe" airbag will do, it may take longer.

What if they Hit the Passenger side door and you dont have side impact air bags and your passenger dies? Or what if you get hit from behind? Very few accidents are "HEAD ON". Dont be concerned with variables you have no control over. Even if you have both air bags there is no way to know the outcome. Just live your life and realize life and death is not something you can control. As long as you drive responsibly your more likely to have a safe driving experience for both you and your passenger. But if your convinced a passenger side air bag is too important then a 94 or 95 model would be better.

That's what they make Big Brake Kits for, and seat belts!:)

I too was interested in the safty of these cars way back when i bought it. i believe one of my first post was a similar topic on how the cars did in crashes. To me it is important to know how one holds up in a crash, it is my daily driver and i would like to know if i get rear ended on the street how the car will react. From the responses i got from people and the pictures i was shown the car hold up amazingly well. i was shown many where the car was totaled but the passenger compartment was still in tact and solid. i hope this helps and good luck finding a car, scott

do NOT use a 5-point without a rollbar. If you roll it over with a 5-point but no rollbar, your head and neck will be supporting the roof.

With that said, I think the general consensus around here is that airbags do MUCH more harm than good. Read up on them. They are not the end all, save all that you think they are. You'd do much better for yourself to buy a rollbar/cage for your car.

That, and I entirely agree with this statement:

I totalled my R1 on the street.. I survived eventhough the airbag...never even came close to me...gave me a good dusting :)

anyways the FD is a very safe ride....

I totally agree with martini when he stated

"With that said, I think the general consensus around here is that airbags do MUCH more harm than good. Read up on them. They are not the end all, save all that you think they are. You'd do much better for yourself to buy a rollbar/cage for your car."

Unfortunately, last night, i think i may have totalled my car, its too early to know if its totalled or not, i gotta wait for a report, but that dang airbag didnt do anything except scrape up and make my left arm swell. And i was going about 40mph when the dumbass ran the red light. The stupid dust the airbag puts out makes it even harder to breath. I PERSONALLY believe if your driving under 55 mph, a simple 5 pt. harness will do sooo much better than an airbag. And plus it'll put less stress on one single shoulder like the stock seatbelt does and spread it out over a greater surface area, thus... preventing bruises and a girlfriend with a fractured collar bone or clavical.
