next step for more HORSEPOWER!

i ran my car on a dyno last weekend and was a little upset because i only made 220 rwhp. i have a few mods like....xs power SMIC, larger aluminum radiator, under drive pulley kit/removed air pump, custom intake and 3" exhaust all the way with no cat. i am running the stock turbo's and plan to stay with them..............what else can i do to get more HP?

Mahjik 04-13-09 12:29 PM

Get an ECU upgrade and increase your boost.

what do you suggest.

+1 get a power fc

What type of dyno was that on? it's pretty low numbers for having any mods, I believe stock fd's dyno 215ish. Do you have a duct for your intercooler? if you dont that makes it hard for it to do its job. What were your intake temps?

catch-22 04-13-09 12:39 PM

i made 291 with the same mods and a front mount. are your twins working properly? how many miles on the motor?

not sure what brand dyno it was,he calls it a heartbreak dyno. he said on a dyno jet dyno my numbers would have been about 15% higher. i don't yet have a duct made for my intercooler and i'm not sure what my intake temp was. there was another fd there who has a few mods from peter farrell supercars and a tune by them as well and he only made 224 at the wheel.

janrx7 04-13-09 01:24 PM

Get a power fc, walbro pump, boost controller. With these and your mods i made 290whp @14psi and a conservative tune. Now i am pushing 351whp with the mods in my signature.

Have you read the fAQ thread yet?

Start by doing some research on the suggestions in this thread:
https://www.rx7club.com/showpost.php...38&postcount=6

Then post back with other questions.

Something isnt right with your car, it should have put down at least 260rwhp if it was running correctly. I have a feeling your are having some issues with your secondary turbo.

Lol the "heartbreak dyno" is a dyno dynamics, they generally do show a 15% difference. I was tuned on the same type of dyno(mods in sig). I would make sure you have no boost leaks and everything is running properly then get a power fc you can find them around 700 with a commander.

As for the intercooler I would get that a duct before you up the boost it is just getting a mix of outside air and the heat produced by the radiator below it.

Also you may want to check what you dyno on a dyno jet, you will probably dyno around 260 rwhp

Cgotto6 04-13-09 02:19 PM

What was your boost pattern? This thread is worthless with out this info.

Also, an aftermarket smic with no duct is actually worse than the stock unit with stock ducting. Heat soak galore, especially on a dyno.

Yup. I'm really not sure how to guess at a number without boost information.

prrex4ever 04-13-09 05:22 PM

Like previously stated something isn't right. My FD made 303whp on RX7.com's dyno last week on stock turbos, injectors and stock engine internals at 12psi. I have basically the same mods as you except for the Power FC and upgraded fuel pump.

FearNoPiston 04-13-09 05:23 PM

just noticed your running full open exhaust with the stock ecu....that is dangerous.

duval7 04-13-09 06:32 PM

When running a aftermarket SMIC where can you get the correct ducting? Is it something you can buy or do you have to make it yourself?

purerx7 04-13-09 06:38 PM

I believe pettit and PFS make after-market ducts. If you have any experience with fiberglass, making your own duct is SUPER easy. I might have to do a write-up on how to make one with fiberglass.

As mentioned before, we need to know how much boost you are running, that is an incorrect whp for your mods at 10psi.

cptpain 04-13-09 07:12 PM

before thinking about plunking down the $500-800 for a PFC.... either take it to a rotary specialist, or DIY and go over the entire engine bay and make sure all of your vacuum hoses, check valves, and solenoids are in working order and inspect all couplers. As well as looking for a duct for the SMIC, if not, make your own.

THEN, you get a Boost controller to keep boost at 10psi... although some tend to think that even a BC will not prevent boost creep, at least you have one for when you get tuned.

After all is said and done, go and get it tuned. Im sure with all that, you'll make much more power than what you dynoed.

BTW, on my dad's FD, our initial dyno was similar to your numbers..... 220hp with TBE including Bonez HFC, and Bonez Resonator, SMIC, HKS intake with custom airbox etc.....
It took me an entire week, off and on, going all over the car making sure I checked and replaced all I/C couplers and upgraded to T-Bolt clamps. Completely replaced the entire rats nest including all the solenoids and check valves, and went with the Viton hoses.
Before all of that, the car had some trouble idling, never held boost and a few other problem..

Which is what happens when you buy an FD thats owned by an elderly woman who only does oil changes on the car and DD's it.

After getting all the mechanical issues solved, and fixing the leaky oil pan and changing the clutch with the rear main seal and front main seal, water pump, thermostat, rx7.com AST.... we bought a PFC, and on the base tune at Gotham we got 270ish hp. Boost stayed at 10psi, and Steve Kan did a great job on the tune, after lunch, we turned the boost up to 14psi and we finally got 315hp.

This is the result we got, after performing A LOT of the necessary work that was needed on the car. Idle was now at a rock solid 850rpm, replaced all the necessary stuff as well such as plug wires(Taylor 10mm), NGK 9s all around, and does not have any problems with reliability.

We also replaced the radiator with the Mazda metal replacement, and used a Denso/ Supra TT pump re-wired and new filter.
But now we are finding that the ignition coils are going bad, and the turbos are on their way out. We are going BNR's next month.

Its going to take a lot of investment in time and money, going over the entire engine bay like this, but doing so will assure that you will not have any further problems, and will also help you spot any other potential problems that are or could hinder the performance of the car.

A little bit of searching and looking at the FAQ, will help you find the info and how-to's on some of the more complicated tasks, but the reward is so much sweeter.

BTW, we really need to know what your boost is at..... if the motor is seeing boost creep, then it can be a potential for disaster for the motor.

clinticus 04-13-09 07:53 PM

thank you everyone for the advice. the one thing that leads me to believe there is nothing MAJOR wrong with my car is because the other fd there ran almost the exact same numbers and everyones cars made low numbers on this dyno. i did not make this post because i thought something was wrong with my car...i just wanted some advice as to what my next step should be. for everyone who has asked i made 10 psi on first turbo and 11 on second. the other guys fd did the same psi as well. there was a guy with a 10 second nova who has made 500 hp on other dyno's and only put down 386 on this one.

Oh I see.... im no used to seeing numbers that low on a stock FD... the lowest i've seen was 236 on my friends near mint FD on a mustang.... im used to Dynojet numbers

Geez, if that was on a dyno dynamics good lord.

But yes, a Power FC with a tune and a boost controller if you dont already have one as well as a fuel pump.

clinticus 04-13-09 08:34 PM

i do not have a power fc or boost controller and still have stock fuel pump. the other fd was stock except for peter farrell smic and tune his HP was 224. i have pictures of my mods on
lawrencetuners.webs.com i am rx7spawn on there the other fd is on this site as well it is BOG411

FixableUnknown 04-13-09 08:46 PM

I would recommend concentrating on your fuel and turbo control system like cptpain said. If your car has high miles (Like most FDs ) you need to go through the rats nest and check and or replace hoses etc. While your there check your FPD and possibly remove your injectors and have them cleaned and flow checked. It would also be a good idea to check your oil injection lines and check valves ( refer to the factory shop man. for test). I just lost a rear rotor due to one of these valves failing. This whole process is fairly inexpensive if you do the work yourself and will give you a good starting point for future mods. Do a search for the the mod process. The guys on this site are awesome and can tell you the pros and cons for each mod. Most of the mods have been well documented for hp and longevity dating back to the 90s. If I can give one caution, it would be don't get too greedy with the stock twins. I did and now I am in the middle of a $10 grand upgrade to a new engine and single turbo. Good Luck.

Hi, I'm the other FD that Clint was talking about and I'm not really worried about how low the numbers were on this dyno, we later found out that the inertia settings were messed up and that it was setup up for a diesel truck they were tuning the previous week or something.

The weirdest thing about the dyno day, (and it was my first dyno btw) was that even with the PFS piggy back deal set on medium/high I would only see between 13-15 on the primary turbo but it would never go above 10 when the secondary kicked in, possibly not enough load on the dyno? Since I never had a problem building boost on the street I found this to be odd.

Actually just ordered a PFC and am really excited to get it along with the 2 hallman pro rx's  since I know almost next to nothing about my car and wanna keep it running correctly and safely, later on FC datalogit and lots more fun with supporting mods (AI, etc.).

X.ProphetEzra.X 04-24-09 01:14 AM

Here's a pic of the dyno sheet. Doesn't look too bad 'cept for the final number, and the fact that it only goes to 114mph (4th gear pull)
