Newbie says hi (& boost gauge question)

I've been lurking around here for a while now, so I thought I better officially say hi, with some pics of my car:

http://www.geocities.com/laracers_vr_r1/

I have about a bizillion questions, but I'll start with the boost gauge. When I bought the car the boost gauge (PFS) was installed, but not screwed down to the A-pillar or dash. I want to avoid drilling holes, so does anyone have an idea how to mount the gauge without marking the interior permanently? I could stick it to the windshield, but that would look ugly from the outside. Any ideas? Is there another gauge I could buy that would make this easier?

More questions to follow...

if your car has a cell phone adapter, just hook it to that to hold it. Or put if behind the wheel, or do what mine has and drill it in under the wheel so you can see it when you look at your legs.

I don't get it...

You can order a column mount for the gauge (52 mm) from RX7store.net, but beware - they've been on backorder forever. I ordered mine on Jun 26th and have yet to recieve it.

You mean one like this:

http://66.216.67.51/product.asp?0=212&1=267&3=211

Does it require making any holes or other permanent changes?

Has anybody used a steering column pod like this

http://66.216.67.51/product.asp?0=212&1=267&3=212

Any pictures of one mounted?

sszablya 09-24-02 01:51 PM

The first one is an "A-Pillar Pod". it requires holes to be drilled in the A-Pillar cover. The steering column pod is the one I'm ordering. It requires no modification, and snaps into place easily, replacing the trim piece that is there. It's $90 or so, and it'll probably take awhile to get, cause it's on backorder. Apparently the Manuf. can't keep up with demand.

Somebody wll have a pic of one mounted... I don't right now. You could search for it, though.

Pettit racing has a small pic...

Goto: http://www.pettitracing.com

click on "Instruments" (in the left side frame)
They call it "TKT Column Boost Gauge Kit"

Does the column-mount obscure the other gauges very much?

sszablya 09-24-02 02:13 PM

No, it just covers the 9 on the tach by a little bit. You shouldn't really need to see that since you've got a shift alarm. That's about it. There's no tilt on an FD, so no worries with pod clearance; the only bad thing I've heard is that SOMETIMES the pod has to be modified to fit certain brands of gauges.. apparently it's not always deep enough. Your vendor should know what works, just call them.

Yeah, that's pretty sweet. I thought mine was goo9d with 49k when I bought it.

LAracer 09-24-02 03:52 PM

Thanks sszablya and ttb. Actually, it's got 21k now, since I drove it back from Arkansas :(.

Looks like I'll be getting the column-mount. I'll take my chances with the fitting (unless anyone knows for sure that the PFS boost gauge doesn't fit).

You could always go with the saab 3 gauge panel below your stereo.

Great looking ride ... welcome to the obsession!

I think the din panel is the best way to go. You can also go with one of the pods that mount in the center channel spot. They just snap in, no permanent alteration.

din panel => look here:

or here near the bottom:

I like the din panel mount!! Where can I pick one of those babies up? I didn't see them on the RX-7 Store.net

LAracer 09-24-02 04:49 PM

Great pics. The center channel one looks cool, but I only have 1 gauge:( . The column-mount looks pretty clean too though. Plus, you don't have to turn your head to look at it.

You can get the saab din panel at any saab parts dealer.

wish i could say that...

anyways welcome to the club. and ISUPoss has the steering column pod, and he *might* have a few pics of it if you PM him.

i ordered the steering column from the 7store around the same time you did sszablya... i've talked to jason a few times since then, and they finally got hold of the manuf., and he was told they were 'designing them to fit better' and that they would be shipped to the 7store by the end of last week... but they still haven't shipped them. anyways... i stopped getting pissed off about it a month ago because i know that it's not the stores fault at all... just .patiently waiting for my column, i've had the boost guage since the end of july.

edit: LAracer, you could also try the interior/exterior section for people mounting guages and whatever in place of the AC/heat controls... search for 'gmonsen' or '94touring'...

edit numero 2: WOO-HOO! my scuff plates arrived today

edit #3: (keep remembering stuff)... talked to jason today and he said he was going to post and update in the RX7Store section in the for sale forum about the steering columns, just figured i'd let you guys know...
