Newbie question about a JDM 13b motor

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forums cause I've just bought a new project which is a 93 RX7 FD with a blown motor. I'm looking at my options as far as rebuilds and replacement motors and have come across the JDM 13b complete motor and trannys on eday for no more than 2grand. I know its gonna sound like a stupid question but if I'm assuming correctly this is a direct bolt in swap for my car right? Any info would help....Thanks.

JDM motors are pot luck - you may get a nice, low-mileage motor, or you may get a very blown motor that's sat outside on the docks for years, literally. It's a complete crap shoot.

The core short block is identical to the US engine, but all the crap bolted on to it has some minor differences, particularly with emissions (no EGR, to start with).

Smart way to go is either have your motor rebuilt or drop in a Mazda reman. That way you'll have a guaranteed good motor that's gonna treat you right. Regardless of how you go, take the time and inspect EVERYTHING on the motor and replace anything that needs it, especially water and fuel lines. For coolant and fuel lines, use ONLY Mazda parts.

If you want a budget rebuild, hit up Kevin Landers at rotaryresurrection.com - he's a great guy, and can do a really nice rebuild for a very fair price.

I picked up a JDM engine and had it sent to Kevin at Rotary Resurrection for inspection and porting.

I got lucky with my crap shoot, and the JDM engine internals ended up being in great shape. Everything was reused, and Kevin placed the wear on the internals at around 10k.

I was more then satisfied with all of his hard work, and his porting. JDM + Landers = the way to go.

Personally I would pass on the used motor and get a remanned short block. Last I checked they were $2400. At least then you know your getting a good motor and a warantee.

Yup. They're up to $2600 now, but in my experience JDM motors are typically old/rusty/blown.
