NEWBEE question
Hey I just purchased my RX7 about a week ago bone stock and I already changed the plugs, ypipe, hoses and downpipe . I read on a couple of threads that a stand alone ECU is needed if I wanted to change my stock intercooler and on a couple of threads it was not necessary. I already have a greddy 2 row and a koyo radiator should I install them without the ecu or wait till I purchase a standalone?

Congrats and Welcome to the club!
The basic rule of thumb is 3 flow mods= you need a new ecu. I think you should be fine. with just an IC. Read this page: http://robrobinette.com/mod_pro_con.htm |

You'll be fine with an IC. Limit your boost to 10lbs dont forget. Go for a racing beat catback while your at it. Then if you have time get it dynoed and check your readings on a wideband, I'll bet they'll still be in the 11s.

boost controller

well remember when you install the ic you will need a intake with it so that be intake, dp, cb, ic. That's 4 mods. I had no problem with my old FD with the same mods and it had 140,XXX miles on the original engine which is still has.

on the other hand, I have a just a cat-back and dp and get 14psi*
* though on a jdm fd running japanese high octane petrol |
Get the ECU
Get the ECU Get the ECU Get the ECU Why risk it?? get it over with and ADD mods to your hearts desire |

so, basically: get a boost controller.
sure, might get away with it, might not - as above, someone has 'x' amounts of mods = fine, another has 'x-1' mods and = danger zone. At the end of the day, the boost controller is another mod that is an absolute must, and will create a buffer that might just stop you from saying "oh, shit, maybe that mod wasn't such a bright idea" *insert $5k now* |
intake, dp, mp and catback and you will spike boost cut.

I would get the ECU so when you want to mod the car more you dont have to worry about it..

When I bought my car it had intake, PFS SMIC, GReddy SP catback. Boost was fine. I then added a downpipe. Added boost controller that I had laying around just because I had it. Boost still fine. Added midpipe and restrictor plate. Boost still rock solid at 10 psi.
I basically added every single bolton for the car you can get onto it without an ECU for the longest time. If you can control your boost then you are fine. The ECU is a great idea though because you will likely want to keep modding your car and at some point you're going to need it. For now though, I would get a boost controller. Do the ECU when you get a midpipe or when you can afford it. |
