Newb - Single Turbo Kits & Engine Rebuild Kits
Hi there guys. Great forum you got going on here so i thought i would join up. Im from Glasgow in Scotland and have just bought my first Rex. I bought it with the knowledge that it had engine problems so i knew that i would likely have to rebuild it.
So while im in the process of rebuilding it i thought i might as well go single and reduce problems. So my questions are as follows and any help advice is much appreciated: 1 - Where is a good place to get single turbo kits from that are not going to explode after 10 miles and take out my newly rebuilt engine and at the best prices? 2 - Where is a good place to get a rebuild kit from? Prefferably one that is using Mazda parts or better? Thanks in advance guys :icon_tup: |
The best single turbo kit is the one that is carefully planned. Aside from the turbo, manifold, intake piping, and downpipe, you need the other stuff. Aftermarket ECU, upgraded fuel system, intercooler, boost controller, etc. I'm not aware of any single turbo kit that covers the "other stuff". It might be best to rebuild the engine and re-use the stock turbos. Then do the single conversion when the car is running well. Changing everything at once without experience is asking for an undiagnosible, never-quite-running-right moneyhole.
These cars are a load of fun to drive with a properly functioning stock setup. Dave |
^ Hit the nail on the head. Unless you have a shop that's very experience with fd's you're likely to come headfirst into unpredictable and "uncorrectable" problems. Plan it all out to a t or pay someone that's competent.

There are a few people from Scotland and the UK and Ireland on this board. Might want to check with them also.

Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda offers great prices and he ships internationally. He also owns an FD so he knows exactly what parts you're describing, no part # needed. His email is hmkparts@aol.com, tell him Rich sent ya :)

The car has an Apexi PFC, Greddy Boost contoller, re-amemiya exhaust all the way through, and a lot of other trick goodies. I will give Malloy Mazda a shout and see what they are offering.

Take care that the boost control is done properly on this car. Full exhausts cause a lot of blown engines because the installer never caught in the increased boost level.
