New Twins Smoking a lil after install...
 

So I just installed a fresh set of Efini twins, w/ fresh gaskets all around after I was having an exhaust leak on the old turbos. Wasn't smoking at all before. Started it up today for the 1st time and after a couple minutes subtle smoke started to come off the turbos. Smells almost plastic/rubbery.

Is this normal?

I know everything's on there good and tight. Pondering if it's just the new-new turbos and gaskets cooking off for a little oil'ly mixture. I also used never-seeze on the bolts holding the turbos to the box off the block, and on the downpipe to the turbs, and read it could just be this cooking off.

Thoughts?

Sounds like there was something on the turbos that is "cooking off". Keep an eye on it.

Did the smoke goes away after awhile? And does it happen every time you start your car?

Only started it once for about 7 minutes. Didn't smell like oil or coolant so I don't think it's an issue w/ the cooling lines to the turbs. The new fuel pump/filter/fuel computer brought up the pressure and one of my hard fuel likes broke around a surface rusty section, so I shut it off and am going to replace the lines.

I was just reading that if you use the graphite style never seize on a hot pipe that it will all burn off, so I'm guessing that's what it is. Should have used a copper based never seize from what I read. I'll post more once I start it again with the new lines, but my guess is the graphite style never seize on the downpipe-> turbo & turbo->block is what's smoking off.

You always get smoke off stuff after working on it. Remember, you weren't installing those turbos in a clean room, you get greasy fingerprints, dust, surface oil, whatever that's on them will burn off.

Totally normal. After they're fully up to temp and all the contaminants are gone you'll be good.

New engines smoke the same way on a fresh rebuild, just burning all the crap off.

::nods:: That's what I figured, I just wanted to post to ease my concerns. New 3 lines front to back will be into Mazda then straight on my car tomorrow so it'll be time for take 2 on the over-haul restarting to learn the Apexi.

This guy knows what he's talking about...Though I'm still not sure how he fits his mega hands into the tight spaces of our engine bays. :egrin:

If you wrapped the DP while you were at it that'll smoke and smell a bit as well.

^ Not just smell a bit, it smells like crap for awhile :lol:

new turbos will always smoke slightly just keep an eye on them, if they keep smoking after a 100 miles or so then i would worry.
