New twins Question
I have the chance to buy twins for what I believe is a good deal. Besides them "looking" new and checking for shaft play, how else can I tell that they weren't just cleaned very well? It is a local buy. What would new twins be worth w/ zero miles? 2.5k?

stick your finger deep inside the snail...if you get any oil residue then you can expect to find it in your intercooler and in smoke out the tail.
i had a half dozen guys from the big list offer me their turbos years ago...every set i saw was promised to not leak...every set i put my finger in had a fingerfull of oil. no good. j |

Nooooooooo....They are supposed to be BRAND NEW, so I guess I will be able to see some signs of cleaning if they are not, its almost impossible to clean something with that many small parts completely unless you dip them in acid for a week ;)
I'd be getting them for under $1600 and mine have over 116k on them. Still pull good boost (10 primary and 14 secondary w/ my set-up), but it's got to be only a matter of time. I'm one of the old schoolers I guess and still love twins. Thanks for the input guys. |
value
Ok, next question: Should I buy new twins if mine are still Ok (at 116 k mi.) or send mine off for the stage 1 upgrade from BNR? OR, how about buying the new ones then getting a stage 1 upgrade? Cash is a bit tight, but the upgrade would be nice....

Originally posted by areXseven Are they attached to the Mainifold, If so, check for big cracks around Manifold ports/chambers. That should be an indication of how "old" the twins really are. If no shaft play, chances are that they are working properly with no oil leak. Also check for punch marks around the Compression Housing mating with the Bearing Housing. Punch marks are usually an indication of a Re-Build job. They sell new for about 2.5 to 3K (with Manifold). One more thing to do:...Spin the Compression wheels with your finger. It (they) should spin freely. LOL;) |

If they are new, ask to see a copy of the receipt.
RP sells new 99 spec turbos for about $2500. Actually they ran out but a new shipment is due in April. Jack |
