New Tein hood damper announced at SEMA

I've thought it would be cool to add struts that automatically open the hood, and Tein thinks so too -

http://www.tein.com/hooddamp.html

Installation looks ridiculously easy. Click on the FD3S application link for the manual, pics, etc. of the unit. There's 2 struts - one on either side. It attaches to an unused hole on the fender and one of the hood hinge bolts. My only beef would be the damper is Tein's green color, which is a little obnoxious, but at least it's a top-quality product.

Has anyone seen any other hood strut kits for the FD? BTW, list is $145, which is pretty reasonable.

BTW, there was a rumor that Greddy was coming out with a new aluminum oil pan for the FD. Close, but no cigar - they released an upgraded oil pan for the RX-8 (SE3P) -

Ah well.

The miata guys have had aftermarket hood struts forever

the_glass_man 11-08-04 02:11 PM

Nice. I don't see the need for one unless you want to add some bling under the hood. Why the hell does the RX-8 need a new oil pan?

EVS.TurboTuner 11-08-04 02:28 PM

Pretty cool idea. Get it! Let us know how it works!

DaleClark 11-08-04 02:40 PM

I think the RX-8 oil pan is twofold - first, to increase capacity, and second, it probably has a built-in drain for a turbo. On Trust Japan's site they mentioned about use with a turbo kit. I know Greddy is working on an RX-8 kit, and this may be a component of the kit.

I'll probably end up getting those Tein hood dampers at some point. The quality of their products is top-notch, and I've gotten spoiled by the hood on my SC300 :).

Makes sense. Tein's products are top notch, I've got nothing but good things to say about their coilovers.

JaNusSolSumnus 11-08-04 03:21 PM

I know I'm ordering them ASAP! :)

Awesome stuff, I was about to embark on making my own setup as it isnt too hard but given the reasonable cost I see no reason to bother now.

DamonB 11-08-04 03:35 PM

I would do it but I honestly can't think of a time when I felt my hood prop was in the way. The only thing that gets irritating at times is having to remove the strut bar to work on stuff I need to work on :p:

neofreak 11-08-04 04:29 PM

Cool, I'll have to order a set.

There are other brands w/ them in past RX-7 Magazines but they were all in the Y30,000 range.

apex_sideway 11-08-04 04:33 PM

Awesome.

wReX 11-08-04 04:42 PM

Has anyone else ever tried to close the hood with one hand? :D

I'll be getting a set down the road for sure.

tinfan82 11-08-04 05:03 PM

NICE....I'll get one forsure...

cewrx7r1 11-08-04 09:05 PM

I'll buy a pair to open my two storage compartment lids. Life is tuff!

1234rotor 11-08-04 09:52 PM

Dang, now all i need is a remote hood pop and i'll be set when I want to fiddle under the hood or vent out hot air after a drive.

I pop my hood constantly, and when i am fixing other peoples cars on a daily basis...would be nice to have some ease after hours tweaking the 7.

94RHDFD 11-08-04 10:31 PM

How do you guys think they would work with a carbonfiber or fiberglass hood? You think it might want to throw the hood up or make the hood want to fold when trying to close? Any thoughts?

pianoprodigy 11-08-04 10:34 PM

Kinda neat...

saburo 11-08-04 10:44 PM

what if the struts failed and it fucking killed you. Thats would suck ass. Kinda cool anyway.

ummmm an FD hood doesn't weigh much of anything, I don't forsee that one happening.

DaleClark 11-09-04 09:33 AM

I do remember a LONG time ago when the first carbon fiber hoods hit the market, that someone weighed them and the weight was very similar to the stock hood. That said, I think the struts would work well with an aftermarket hood.

Good thing are the struts aren't bobo Taiwan junk - Tein makes VERY top quality products. I doubt these will go out on you any time soon. Even if they do, Tein can likely rebuild them, as they do their shocks.

Tons of cars already have these, I got hit on the head once. A stupid ford, i didn't notice, but my coworker said it just started to slowly come down a little, then just let go and dropped. I was pretty angery, but not injured.

RedR1 11-09-04 12:47 PM

on a side note, to go with the new releases, GReddy already released an all aluminum radiator for our FD's.

DaleClark 11-09-04 12:52 PM

I'm sure the Greddy rad is cheap, too :).

Dale

RedR1 11-09-04 12:54 PM

IIRC from the option mag, it was around 3xx.xx and some change (rough conversion of 119/1). I'll flip thru it when I get off from work and let ya know.

DaleClark 11-09-04 01:04 PM

Found the radiator on Trust Japan's website. Doing a quick search revealed a street price of 65,520 yen or about $605 US. Ouch!

KaiFD3S 11-09-04 01:40 PM

that's a sweet device, make life a lot easier, I just dont like the fact that now you have to push on the hood to close it, you wont be able to just drop it close.

Jason 11-09-04 03:19 PM

I have 4 of the hood dampers on the way to me. Price is $133.

Jason

Klar 11-09-04 03:27 PM

Sweet, defenently something for your SO to get you for Christmas or Hanaka(sp)...

You probably don't - you probably just push on it until it's about halfway closed, then the resistance goes to nothing and it closes easily. That's how most hood struts work on cars that come with them stock.

I have them up at the store

http://www.rx7store.net/index.asp?Pa...ROD&ProdID=864

I have sold 2 of the 4 I have coming in, so place your order now if you want one. They will then be on backorder for a few weeks.

ok jason, i just placed an order for a set... and a few other things. hang on to one of them for me. also, whats up with shipping costs?? i ordered a defi boost gauge, 2 radiator caps, and the tein hood openers..... $30 bucks for shipping sounds pretty damn high. im guessing the shipping charge doesnt exactly reflect the actual cost of shipping? -heath

As someone with the M2 Large IC, which interferes with the OEM hood prop, I think I'm going to spring for this. I haven't had a hood prop for 4 years and hate it.

RotorMotor 11-09-04 10:10 PM

another question (not so related to this).... but my REAR struts really suck, and i need some stronger ones to open my hatch with a 99 wing. anyone know of any STRONG aftermarket units which would do the job?? i guess i could always order the 99 spec trunk openers... but id need a source to order them from, and im sure they would be extreemly expensive

DaleClark 11-09-04 10:44 PM

Almost seems that I found the rear hatch struts in the application catalog at *Pep Boys* of all places. I think they're pretty non-special.

Might be worth checking with some local parts sources and see if they can get something. Probably would be worth trying - new ones would definitely work better than 10 year old ones.

yeah i checked the catalogue at kragen and they can get some aftermarket ones too. but ive heard they are not so strong.... mazda apparantly has a few different versions depending on whether you have a wing or not, and i think they have another one for the 99 wing??? i cant remember exactly (i should start a new thread) ok back to the thread

allenhah 12-01-04 12:22 PM

Jason, do you still have one for sale? Does anybody have this installed yet? Any feedback?

Tofuball 12-01-04 12:24 PM

I wonder if I could modify these to fit my FC . . . . :)

JaNusSolSumnus 12-01-04 01:09 PM

I still havent recieved mine. I thought he had them in stock but I came to find out they were not expected for another week and now another week delay has become present. :( Not as if I can make much use of them at this point with my car sitting on jackstands.

Cant wait to see them though, hopefully I can get my car going within the next two weeks and get to install them right about the same time. :)

Jason 12-01-04 02:56 PM

Tein has shipped the hood dampers to me and should be here today. All four are sold but I have more on order.

Jason

AgentSpeed 12-01-04 04:35 PM

Check out rotary extreme. Chuck has made some too. His struts are black and the mounting points are a little more heacy duty. I even think they are cheaper for a set.

papsmagu 12-01-04 09:56 PM

how far do they open up? picture shows them almost vertical...is that there full range?
