new muffler ideas

hey all ive been looking to replace the muffler on the FD and after talking around with some shops in my area I was recommended to try a coffin muffler. Link. I have heard good things about these in the past, but mainly from some of my shall we say country folk friends who like the obnoxiously loud exhaust. Despite that I have heard that this muffler somehow manages to create a mild vacuum with the EG at moderately high flow levels and I was wondering if this might be worth looking into, or if I should go with something more classical from racing beat and the like. I probably should mention I have a guy who will custom fit a cat-back system with this muffler for me for $200 as he owes me a little favor. Thoughts? Concerns? Opinions?
Thanks
Andrew

I'm wondering what kind of clearance you are going to get from the tallest point on that.

I've got VEINS in my teeth and VEINS in my muffler!

Thats what I say too. People need to step outside the box every once in a while and maybe they will actually stumble across the new "fad" for the 7. Just cause your the first to try something doesnt mean its wrong!

pretty silly. theoretically and aesthetically. don't lame up your exhaust with that shit.

adamrs80 12-07-09 08:30 PM

Those mufflers are gimikey and made for people who like hot rod hearses and actually know when gravedigger is coming to town.

I doubt that it would fit, it does look hideious but I guess that is subjective. If it did fit you would not see it very much, hopefully anyways.

I 2nd the idea that it would not be able to handle the heat.

I know these forums like it when we're all nice to each other and respect each others ideas but even if it was a perfect fit you would be wrecking or shatting upon a car that was never supposed to have a coffin muffler.

you could run a greddy high power cat back like me they are cheap brand new. and then u could run a magnaflow muffler inline also

Or he could run a 4 rotor, quad turbo, 10 wheel drive insano-mobile with jet boosters!!

What does this have to do with the thread?

i dont think that muffler would fit on a FD but im not 100% sure make sure it can handle the heat

LMAO fortunately this has been around for much longer than that god-awful book, but i think ill probably end up going through with this, providing it fits, at least for the short run until i can save enough for a full greddy cat-back system. When i get it installed ill report on how it works out.

sevensix 12-07-09 10:57 PM

make sure you get some dyno numbers on it lol

asianguy02 12-07-09 11:07 PM

lol, considering how it looks, it damn well better perform at least a little huh?

I never actually looked at that link to the coffin muffler till today. Wow, that thing would look pretty out of place on the FD. Not commenting on the quality or anything, but I dont think I could let that find a home on my car. I originally thought coffin was just a brand name or something, definitly not the case, haha.

And if you ever need an upgrade you can just go "open casket".

adamrs80 12-08-09 09:25 PM

There are other mufflers out there that are designed to "suck" the exhaust right out of a car or truck, they are not shaped like coffins though and not made for RX-7s. Does the rotary not need some backpressure? I'm sure the old GSL-SE and 86-91 NA 13B needed backpressure for the port actuators to work. Different engine but I'd bet some backpressure is good or necessary. I guess the cat will give some.

Get a hearse, put the body on a 4x4 truck frame, get a west coast choppers sticker on the rear window, install some coffins. That would seem like a more fitting use, although still stupid.

+1

You said its going to cost $200 to make a CB with that muffler so why not spend a little more for something normal.

asianguy02 12-09-09 01:15 AM

well i havent seen many used CBs in the for sale section, and honestly after having rode shotgun in a couple of other vehicles that had this muffler installed, the difference is extremely pronounced, particularly in turbocharged anything. It makes a huge difference in turbo lag going from something with a half second or more lag down to almost nothing at all and this is vs other aftermarket mufflers, albiet the ones on the cheaper end magnaflow, flowmaster etc. so i just figure its worth a shot, and since odds are high it wont even be visible i dont have to worry about the looks too much.

CheesePowder 12-09-09 11:11 AM

I'm interested in seeing this installed for some reason- just out of curiosity. Will you be able to test back to back on the same car vs. another CB?

So you rode in these cars back to back with two different cat backs?
