New Intake: Dry Ice Induction System from 01 Design System
The DIIS has been discussed in the lounge under a different thread title so I figured I would make an actual thread for it.

PLEASE DO NOT HANDLE THE DRY ICE WITHOUT GLOVES. 2. Q: How long would it last? WE HAVE TESTED THE DIIS IN HOT RACE TRACK CONDITIONS IN THE SUMMER TIME, THE ICE IS SEALED IN AN INSULATED CONTAINMENT UNIT - ONE FULL LOAD WILL LAST ABOUT 1.5 - 2.0 HOURS - WE ARE ALSO DEVELOPING A CARBON FIBER INSULATED COOLER WHICH MOUNTS IN THE TRUNK OF YOUR VEHICLE TO STORE AN ADDITIONAL 10 POUNDS OF DRY ICE FOR UP TO 5 DAYS IN THE SUMMER TIME. 3. Pretty impressive... build box... cut 2 circles out, insert pipe... add dry ice, seal.... Simple yet effective for track use and street racers alike. 245 would be steep if it was the metal version... I wonder what the c/f one will look like? Probably similar to the M2 design with a filter extension and blocked off area.

people are spending alot of time on intake temp stuff when the intercooler temps/pressure drops are what are important

shouldent that be after the turbo? and with as quick as the air passes i dont think it will cool it significantly without some tube and fin design. (like and intercooler)
just imagine an air to water setup with some dry ice... (until you get heat soak anyways) |
It would probably work best after the IC.
The turbos would just end up heating the air again if placed before the turbos. It would probably still be effective but not as much so after the IC |
This is a pretty impressive idea... I'm still wondering how a design could be made with a 10 lb cooler in the trunk??? That'd be one hell-of-an intake pipe. :confused:

Would anyone like me to email them and see if they can come up with something to go after the intercooler pipes? or even possibly make a SMIC with the DICU (dry ice containment unit) after it? |
The dry ice would go away too fast if it was after the turbo, most likely.

like i stated before, would anyone like me to contact them about making SMIC/VMIC's with the Dry Ice Containment Unit on it?

So you are at almost half the cost of a WI system to start with. Your dry ice costs will drive that up. I don't see where you can put a box that large unless you place it where a CAI box would go, and restrict air intake volume. Maybe where the stock battery is, but then other ducts are needed. Our engine bays are too tight for that, unless you have a front mount.

Wow.. Very interesting.. But I'm not sure if its that great of an idea.. First, you have to put the dry ice when the engine is cold.. I wouldn't recommending putting -80 C (-112 F) on to hot surface..

I think this thing has very little actual impact on air intake temps. Think about it... air is rushing down the intake pipes at what.... 100-200 ft/sec? How long is it in this little foot long box for? 0.005 seconds? Not much heat exchange can go on there!

I would think at 100 degree plus will speed up that process.. But I could be wrong.. I also think that it would be better to have it on the IC piping instead of intake. That would help more to reduce intake temp. |

Hmm.. Maybe.. But its hard to say.. I guess real world testing is needed to really find out..

I reckon -
put the box after your IC and use mild steel for the section that is cooled, there shouldnt be any problems after this and I think it will give you the most you will ever get out of performance with this idea. |
I reckon a better ( although tricky) idea would be to fabricate an ice jacket for your IC.

Looks very cool.....but as everyone says it will not work efficiently....after the intercooler is the only way..... and of course U would want the dry ice to go as quick as possible.....that would mean it is doing its job and transfering the cold to the air going by...
