New here..bought 93 RX7..a bit frustrated!
Car running very rich (can smell it ). Changed new catalytic, deleted the first catalytic, new o2 sensor, new plug, new plug wire and new muffler.
I tested the turbo and boosting ok 8-9-10 psi. Tested the compression -- 105 psi both. Checked the plug -- tan color (looks perfect) No engine code error (manually checked by grounding 10 & GRN. Remaining to be checked: Water temp sensor EGR valve Fuel pressure regulator Question, what else you can tell me in regards to rich fuel mixture? I suspected the original owner must have changed or plug some kind of performance chip. I am not too sure about this. I bought a stock ECU in ebay and I am still waiting for the shipment. Air pump working? A cat needs this air to oxidize the normally rich exhaust gasses.

The belt is on but how can I check the air pump quickly knowing its working?
The first thing I checked is the air pump and make sure the previous owner did not alter or disconnect that unit. The air pump is there but how do I check if its working? Is this a clutch driven pump (electric)? |

I failed the emission both HC and CO big time but I passed my idle, therefore my air pump must be working right? I thought the airpump works at low or idle only. |
Correct. If you passed idle emissions, the air pump is most likely OK.

These cars, even in stock form, are still a little "stinkier" than your everyday type car.
You have a 93, so unless you bought a Cali version, you won't have the EGR. I would check/test the Water Thermosensor and the ACV. |
might you have an exhaust leak? check where the downpipe meets the turbo manifold.
what mods do you have? where do you smell it - inside the car while driving? |

If the air pump is working okay, I would be looking for an intake manifold leak somewhere.
Also be sure the gas smell is not a leaky injector. |
Saner, what, exactly, are you smelling?
1. Gasoline? 2. Sulfur odor? 3. Rich "carbon" odor like rich-running engine with no catalytic converter? 4. Oil fumes? Each one has its own different set of possible causes. Also, is it only when you first start the engine, after it is warm, or what? If you can be specific, this could aid a diagnosis. |
I suggest that you take a look at the ECU. See if its the stock unit. Its behind the passenger side kick panel. If it has been upgraded or modified, it will probably have some sort of markings or stickers on it.

Check your map sensor on the right side of the fire wall.

i was going to say.
did you make sure you have a stock ecu? because it would of been a bit of waste of money if you decided to payfor a new stock ecu when you already have one. |
