New to FD's have a couple questions

Hey guys i have done alot of research on rotary's and how to take care of them but still need some info.

are the turbos sequential as in one spools up the other or do both put out boost?

how much oil does it take in an oil change with a new oil filter?

what weight viscosity should i use for PNW weather its fairly cold in the morning but gets up to 70's during the day would 15w-40 do good since its getting colder?

sevensix 09-14-10 11:35 PM

sounds like you haven't done a lot of research and have no time to work on proofreading spelling for your peers here on the board

RotarySB 09-14-10 11:47 PM

Yea definitely sounds like you haven't done any research whatsoever. You can find the answers to these questions in the archives or FAQ sticky.

Ninja636 09-15-10 12:13 AM

ok i just read the whole FAQ's and still don't see the answers two the bottom two questions, i did figure out that both turbos produces boost but at different rpm intervals.

96fd3s 09-15-10 12:33 AM

your climate temps sound similar to mine
i use 15w-40 oil - works for me. :)

Hotwheelz 09-15-10 12:52 AM

First turbo from 2500-4500rpm they both run sequentially above 4500rpm

20w50 summer
10w30 winter
about 4.5 quarts

taken from http://www.fd3s.net/oil.html

The total oil capacity for a dry engine is 5.7 qts for an R1 and
> 5.2 for the standard cars. The oil pan is 4.1 qts. According to my
> 93 owners manual the change vol with filter is 3.7 qts
. So it looks

> two quarts of oil left behind for an R1 and about 1.5 qts for non
> R1s.

:)

^^ thanks guys looks like i need to buy 4qts. does any one know the stock color of the vacuum lines on FD's because mine are red so would it be a safe bet to say they have been replaced?

yep vacuum lines are new

i use 10/30 mobil one non synthetic only

but i know people using 5/30 and 10/40 without any problems

Buy an extra quart and keep it in the trunk, you will need it to top off the system every so often. These engines burn oil by design. Get in the habit of checking your oil when you re-fuel.

20-50W Valvoline

I usually also drain the oil cooler, which holds about 1/3 quart. So if your FD has only one oil cooler, you'll need a little over 4.3 quarts. I usually use synthetic oil with pre-mix gas.

twinsinside 09-15-10 08:11 PM

Oh no not an oil debate *runs for the hills*

I don't recommend asking about premix either =)

Seriously though it sounds like some work has been done with your car.

At a minimum I would immediately make sure that the reliability mods have all been done if you just got the car. All it takes is an exploding ast or radiator end tank to ruin your day (and your engine).

That was going to be one of my next questions is does it burn so much that it need to be check religiously (which i have no problem with) anybody have a ratio of how much gets burned after x mileage?

and thanks for the help guys i really appreciate it.

XLR8 09-15-10 09:54 PM

With a properly working oil metering system, & a healthy engine, it's around 1 quart per 3,000 miles.

However, like most things with our cars, it doesn't hurt to keep an eye on it.

twinsinside 09-15-10 10:03 PM

If you don't know about the AST and radiator problems I'd do a lot more reading, specifically with regards to "reliability mods"

Has anyone here used sea foam in there crank case? is it safe on rotary's? what vacuum line is the best to run it through for the cleaning/smoke screen?

Ninja636 09-16-10 02:46 AM

Also another question if the engine is cold and/or has been sitting for a day or two should the oil dipstick read between the right High to Low level or does the oil only show up on the dip stick when the motor is warmed up? and since im buying oil soon is there any additive or types to avoid like energy conserving?

All of these questions have been answered time and time again. Check the FAQs and read the stickies.

I understand your excitement but you will be doing yourself a big favor if you take the time to search and learn about the answers to your questions on your own. Then when you ask a question, it will be educated and you will most likely earn some respect from the long time owners who will be more willing to answer your question! =)

I agree with XLR8

That is a good average. Although, YMMV due to how often you stay in boost. Also, since it is a new car I'd start off checking it every fill-up to make sure that everything is okay. Once you are confident that you aren't consuming excess oil or leaking, you can relax a bit. (But really, what else do you have to do while you are refueling?)

Get in a habit of opening your hood often and poking your nose around, a lot of heartache can be avoided by catching small things before they become a catastrophe.
