New FD wont start

WTF, come out this morning and she wont start, wont even crank. Put the key in and there is power, turn the key and nothing. I will check codes later but this seems to be yet another common problem

ijneb 01-15-04 08:53 AM

When you turn the key, is there a "click" noise?
I doubt you'll get a code for a blown fuse/bad starter.

moehler 01-15-04 08:56 AM

are you sure it's not the battery? check if your windows work, not just the lights. My battery was too dead to start the car once, but had enough juice to turn on the interior lights. I then tried the windows and the battery fully died.

CRX7 01-15-04 09:08 AM

yeah the lights and windows work fine, i have a class tog o to but will be back in a few.

Snook 01-15-04 09:19 AM

its definetaly your battery

pushstart it drive around for 20 min shut it off and see if it starts up then youll see

Kas 01-15-04 09:26 AM

It could be your solinoid switch on the starter if you have a fully charged battery and you don't hear a click ,its probably the solinoid switch.

Yep, most likely candidate.

You can have enough power for everything except starting the car (I've had this happen as well).

maxpesce 01-15-04 10:38 AM

It can also be the ign switch and the clutch (or "Park" for an auto) interlock switch, make sure the clutch is fully depressed when trying (or the Auto is in P, I have to bang my auto shifter forword sometimes to close the interlock switch) when trying to start it. the Clutch switch is a known weak point in the system.
to check the batery check the voltage w/ a volt meter w/ a load (turn the lights on High Beam)- should be at least 12.4 volts, if it is less then the battery is low or may be bad, charge the battery overnight w/ an automatic type charger, and test again - if the voltage drops quickly the battery needs replaced, if it holds 12.4+ volts for at least 15min w/ the lights on high the battery is probably ok.

Helios 01-15-04 11:21 AM

That happened to me and had the same symtoms. The culprit.....flooded car

CRX7 01-15-04 01:19 PM

well to my dismay, i went and bought a optima battery for 100 bucks and she still wont start, i dont get it last night i was doing some things and let it idle for about a half hour to check leaks, since i turned her off she wont start again.

CRX7 01-15-04 02:11 PM

checked the codes and there are none, still having to push start it to get anywhere, this is not fun please help!?!?

obviousboy 01-15-04 02:19 PM

dude i feel your pain..i put only 28 miles on mine and every thing hit the fan...if its still not starting try jump starting it...if it goes something is sucking the life out of your battery...if so easy fix..un plug battery until you locate problem

start with the easy dumb shit and move onto the hard stuff

Snook 01-15-04 02:21 PM

ok then you know its the starter soilenoid or the starter itself

CRX7 01-15-04 04:08 PM

I figured it would be so i am getting one from a friend in about an hour and we will see. I just put in both the optima battery and new pos and neg cables, had to do some custom shit but got them in nicely. I will post later because there was no change with the battery change. The car still wont even crank, all fuses are fine in the engine bay and in the car, and i have power to everything else.

SwtSxxyKim 01-15-04 05:09 PM

I grounded everything, bought a new starter and battery. there are still times the car doesn't start and needs a push start. I think the car just won't start when it's hot. My friend suggested 15mins of waiting before starting her up again.

CRX7 01-15-04 06:14 PM

Any ideas on where i go with the car if it stil does not start after i get the new starter and there are no codes with new battery?

cleaning and adjusting the idle, she ran for about 30 minutes while i was messing with it and then got a call in the house

bajaman 01-15-04 06:41 PM

As maxpeace says....it is possibly your ignition switch.
My car has done the exact same thing. In fact, I have modified the ignition switch to a remote, hidden push-button due to this. A new switch is like $300, by the way.
If the car is not turning over, just go out and jumper from the positive terminal to the 'S' terminal on your starter and see if the car turns over.
Believe me, I have been here. I bought a new $280 starter thinking that was the problem before I found out it was the ignition switch.

rx7fntc 01-15-04 06:52 PM

Does the instrument panel on the dash light up?

Can you play the radio?

If yes to both and car won't crank, the best thing to do is test the circuit. Just take a lenght of wire, and run it directly from the battery to the starter and once you touch it to the positive terminal on the battery if car doesn't kick on you got a starter issue. If car starts and still won't crank from cabin, use the wire and bypass lengths of the circuit to find your culprit. Always check the clutch switch before doing this... I spent hours diagnosing things and realized it was just that the switch wasn't being depressed.

InsaneGideon 01-15-04 09:44 PM

Tap the starter a few times with a wrench or something -- see if that helps unstick the solenoid (if it's stuck)

Redrotor 01-16-04 12:16 AM

go get the test light and check if power comes when you
turn the ignition to start position.

this is way you can confirm the starter problem.
don't just guess check basic things.

RE13REW 01-16-04 12:32 AM

check up your safety netural switch too.....

RE13REW 01-16-04 12:34 AM

i agree with Redrotor, check the starter problem first. If you could run your car last night, it should be fine. If i m you, i would start from the most common problem first than go more deeply.

CRX7 01-16-04 11:04 AM

ok, thanks for the help, but still need a little more, i ran the wire from the starter to the battery and she turned on no problem, still wont start by herself so this is the ignition switch, now where the hell is it?
