New (eBay) lighting option for your FD?

Has anyone tried this kit? The Knightsports kit is the only one I've ever seriously considered for my FD because I love the pop ups.

This looks like another choice

Bump I'm curious what other people think about these, they look ok. :dunno:

kru510 08-16-09 06:58 PM

i like the concept...just not digging the whole ebay look if you know what i mean. I would be curios in just getting the housings and retrofitting like a acura tl hid lens in place of the classic ebay lens

94touringFD 08-16-09 07:14 PM

I'd like something that would give me better lighting. I'm interested to know if anyone has experience with these.

Brent Dalton 08-17-09 08:05 AM

Ebay look? WTF does that mean? Evo-R is a vendor on this forum.

He has a thread in the interior section when he was fabricating these. I never saw a finished product though. They also make

Ceylon 08-17-09 09:58 AM

Looks interesting.
Would be interesting to see more info/pics.

Supernaut 08-17-09 09:58 AM

Yeah I was waiting for these for a while.

ptrhahn 08-17-09 10:53 AM

Do they sit as low as the KS?

Yes. He copied the KS covers so they are basically the same height-wise.

Natey 09-25-09 10:35 AM

DO NOT BUY

The kit was nowhere near fitting, the guy is trying to deny my Paypal claim, and I wish i would have saved my money for an authentic Knightsports kit, because this Chinese knock-off one is junk. JUNK.

purerx7 09-25-09 11:04 AM

That sucks, guess you get what you pay for. Although, I would not have had high expectations for $400.

David Hayes 09-25-09 11:12 AM

I got bad feelings about this product when it was widely discussed and anticipated in his thread. never answered my questions regarding fitment and quality.

Sorry it didn't work out as it is very much what I would like to have on my car.

ptrhahn 09-25-09 11:47 AM

The only value would be to get the shrouds and integrate with your own lighting/mounting.

Supernaut 09-25-09 12:52 PM

I dont get it, the KS originals arent that much more. Lemmie check...
O GOD WHY! I'll get the orignals anyway.

Thank you Natey for taking the bullet for all of us. Sorry it didnt work out :(. I believe I have a set of evo lights (from rx7store) that look like the stock pop-ups and to be honest Im not that impressed with the quality. When I got mine, one was missing a gasket and one of the ballasts wasn't working. To Jason's credit, he did manage to get me a new gasket and a new ballast (not a matching one) without sending the broken one back. If I learned anything from my experience, its that I should just spend the money on authentic lights.

jmadams74 09-25-09 01:11 PM

There was a thread started on here a while back (I think the mods removed it because it started looking like a group buy) that will be the ultimate if it is completed. Simply a nice looking pop-up with projector hid with appropriate/sharp cutoff -- and a high beam to blow you away on open roads! It's amazing how many "less than ideal" lighting kits have been created for the fd rx7, yet none of them offer the basic abillity to light the road like a modern car with good lighting!

This is the kit from that thread.

The issue with the KS lights is that they are now discontinued and they sell for a high premium over in Japan - that is why our prices for a used kit are pretty close to the price of a new kit when they were available. However, we do offer very good deal's on HID's kits when we find them.

I know. You know the deal. If you find me a set lemmie know! What I want to know is, what are the people selling their sets trading them in for?

Natey 09-25-09 02:24 PM

Ramy sells 'em for about $800 for the non-HID.

Well we get our parts from a variety of places, but all of our ks lights come from one place. Basically, their are companies in Japan that buy heavily modded fd's for dirt cheap and part them out (they make a killing). So, each week I get a list of parts that are for sale, when I find something I like,I notify my partner and he purchases them. Thus, they really aren't trading them in for anything. To be honest, the KS light kit isn't know for having the greatest light output.

Why do you say that? And/or how do you know?
One of the beauty's of that kit is that it was a real HID projector lens with sharp/modern cutoff. These are not HID.
Maybe Dan (Scrub) will chime in?
Thanks.

Not sure what you are referring to but these are from a thread that lasted over three (maybe four) years. Had us all excited during year one, less so for year two, pessimistic during year three and believing the kit would not get done.

EVO-R was the person with the thread and we tried to twist his arm to make a HID kit.

I think he sold his prototype and the quality of what Natey received is appalling. I have seen his sleek kit and i was not impressed and I am less so now. Here is the link to his website. Scroll halfway down for the pop up kit and note you can't order it:

http://www.evo-r.net/product/RX-7/index.htm

The pic almost looks photoshopped to me. Look at the gap (or where it is filled in) on the top edge of the shroud. Also look at the how the lights don't fill the circles in the shroud. Could this be a pic of the KS shrouds and not the EVO-R ones?

jmadams74 09-26-09 08:44 AM

I was referring to a different thread started a month or so ago and subsequently removed. If it happens, it will be great!

Ratjar 09-26-09 12:21 PM

I could care less about the looks. I just want the road to be illuminated. i hate my stock lights, idk how far new bulbs would go or if its the actual design?

KD-93R1 09-26-09 11:10 PM

You can see with these

Dont blow these off because they aren't HID, or some blue colored light. I am willing to bet these will perform as well as (if not out perform) any headlamps . . Now in all fairness, these are not DOT/SAE approved, but on low beam you will never have an issue. Good for anything you drive, they are Hella Euro Conversion headlamps(std. sizes only). The special glass lenses are made with equip. used to make camera lenses. You will notice the unique flukes & ridges in the glass which accurately aims light where you need to see. On low beam (200% more light than halogen headlamp) all the road surface, L&R sides/curbs/ditches/etc. and above you are all precisely illuminated w/o bothering oncoming traffic or vehicles in front of you. I love my 93R1, but the 'plastic" OEM lights left alot to be desired. Especially after driving with these in other cars since age 16. They come with 55/65 watt bulbs, but your gonna want the 55/100 watt ones, 5400' on high beam. This are some sweet headlamps. I did not want to add aux. lights cosmetic wise and did not want to block any air inlets. I think you get the best light output with the pop-up lights because they allow the downward projected light to clear the front nose. My car sits low and I hate hittng potholes. These make you feel safer driving at night in any situation. Many of my friends who rode with me at night went out and bought some of these the very next day.

Mounting Hellas in 3rd Gen RX7

The Hella 5x7's are the biggest that will fit and are close to the OEM size. Having a set of 5x7's in my Toyota Supra I purchased some new OEM Toyota parts for the custom install. OEM parts from other vehicles using 5x7's would probably work as well, but I new the Supra pcs. so I used them. Purchased a pr. of 1985 Supra headlamp bezel pans (black steel pans that headlamps mount in) and a pr. of 5x7 stainless steel retainers. Along with new Hella lamps and 55/100 watt bulbs. Your gonna need a dremel tool too. After removing the OEM lights remove the OEM bezel pans. You will need to take the dremel tool with a cutting wheel and cut out the centers of the OEM pans. Basically youll use the outer frame of the OEM pans and the inner part of the Supra pans to make a custom pan. This pan will mount back in the RX7 headlight housings, but will properly hold the Hella 5x7 headlamps. You know how there are quality products and then there are some products that are just night and day compared to anything else? These headlamps are one of those products.

I am assuming you are referring to retrofitting the OEM pop up case with a HID light? Not the ones discussed by the OP?

Natey 09-27-09 10:53 AM

That's what I was thinking too.

Also, jmadams guy was probably talking about the thread where someone retrofitted a set of projector lamps into his stock pop up housing. I posted in that thread in an attempt to "tag" it, but it looks like it's been deleted. Bummer, because he achieved almost a perfect cut-off and the finished product didn't look Frankensteined or hacked-up at all.

I love my pop-ups, but I hate the output of light they...put out.

Natey 07-13-10 08:32 PM

This issue has been resolved. EVO-R has given me a full refund. Thanks to GoodfellaFD3S, fd3s777 and especially the RX-7 Club.

94touringFD 07-13-10 08:42 PM

I'm glad to hear that after your persistence, as well as GoodfellaFD3S's, that it worked out for you. Any chance you'll be getting in on the sakebomb GB? I love mine, I feel like I need to buy a daily that has as good of headlights now, lol, the '07 Civic coupe doesn't cut it.

Natey 07-14-10 11:00 AM

I'd love to get a set of genuine KS lights, but I hear that the lighting isn't all that great anyway. The Sakebomb ones look real nice, and there is at least one other person fabbing some pop-ups for our cars. I'll probably stay tuned for awhile and see who finishes theirs first. :)

Thanks again to the RX-7 Club for helping this ordeal get sorted out. :icon_tup:
