new AST only has a 1.1cap..worrying??
hey guys, i just installed my D1 AST and the only cap that came with it is a 1.1, im kinda worried abotu the extra pressure it'll put on my cooling system as stock is only 0.9!!! does anyone run anything higher than a 0.9 AST cap and what possible problems will this cause.
i have a 1 year old heater core and heater core lines. the rest are stock. car is a 95 |
is this one of them D1 spec "BREATHER TANKS" with 4 nipples... am sure it comes with 3 caps one has sticker on it 'D1 spec' and rated @ 1.1 the other two not too sure have different center brass and stainless i think... I will post photos today for you...
anyways you got photo of mounting location... i reckon should be ok... anyone??? those Greddy caps are high rated I think 1.3 |
You should be fine. The only time the extra pressure would come into play is at extremely high water temps, at which point you would have hopefully turned the car off anyway.

Going to the 0.9 bar cap was one of the things Mazda did to relieve the stress on the cooling system (original was 1.1 bar) and help prevent some of the engine bay fires caused by spraying coolant on the hot rurbos when a hose failed (only takes a pin hole leak).

the d1 breather tank does come with 3 caps but only the 1.1 one can be used on the tank, the other 2 are not pressure caps.
the exploding water lines are what im afraid of. my car very rarely sees over 90c when driving, only after ive shut off the car do i see it spike up over 100c. i have a powerfc and a greddy temp gauge which is plumbed in right next to the filler cap, strangely enough they rise at very different rates with the PFC showing operating temps (80-85) A LOT earlier than the greddy. with only the powerfc someone might be tempted to thrash it at 80c and infact the temp may only be 65. i have a brand new water temp sensor installed so its pretty accurate. |

i never thrash my car ever! its a semi daily that gets lots of attention. i remember a thread about some guys brother taking his fd out and thrashing it while cold and blowing his engine.

Well then when is it safe to run hard on it? I usually am around 82c!
