need help w/ finished spark plug install

just finished my spark plug install .. 9s for trailings and 7s for leadings .. anyways .. put everything back together .. and just as i start the car .. idles like crap .. car starts bucking and shaking like a heroine addict suffering from withdrawal .. nasty exhaust fumes coming out the exhaust .. any thoughts on what i did wrong? or maybe i knocked something loose? or didnt put things back together right?

Check you map sensor. On driver side firewall next to throttle body. Has vacuum hose with inline filter running to upper intake manifold.

rescueranger 12-02-04 07:10 PM

fuuuuck .. i think im dislexic .. would mixing up the trailing plugs with the leading plugs cause this problem?

CANRX7GX 12-02-04 07:12 PM

yes it would lol :) give that a check and hopefully everything will be fine
Edwin

rescueranger 12-02-04 07:21 PM

just fixed the order of trailing and leading .. but car still buckles .. and when i just let it run .. car shut off on its own

ejmack1 12-02-04 07:35 PM

must be a blown engine... ;)

are you sure you got them in the right order?

rescueranger 12-02-04 07:39 PM

oh god dont kid bout that .. yeah im pretty sure

engine
t1=9 t2=9 t1 l1 t2
l1=7 l2=7 l2

rescueranger 12-02-04 07:40 PM

T1 L1 T2
L2

rescueranger 12-02-04 07:41 PM

hmmm it wont let me write it correctly .. basically the l2 should be directly under the l1

93FD3S 12-02-04 07:44 PM

Just remember "T"=top=trailing ..and "L" lower=leading

ROTARYFDTT 12-02-04 07:49 PM

A plug wire could have become dislodged from one of the coils.

rescueranger 12-02-04 07:51 PM

hmm i dont see any loose tubes or anything .. only other thing i can think of is .. does the wire matter? http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/spark_plug10.jpg
like the trailing 1 and leading 1 looks different from the trailing 2 and leading 2 .. i wasnt too picky on differentiating the wires as i just grabbed the first one i saw and plugged it in

rescueranger 12-02-04 07:52 PM

oh thats not my picture by the way .. its from scudineria site and i used it as a reference .. like the ones with 90 degree and the 180 degree black end plugs are in random order in my car

93FD3S 12-02-04 07:55 PM

I don't think it really matters but the plug wires with the straight boot plug into the leading coil (middle coil).

rescueranger 12-02-04 08:02 PM

wait .. which end is the boot end? the black ends? or the red ends?

Sonny 12-02-04 08:03 PM

I'm not sure if you're using NGK wires, but if so, they are color coded:

http://www.rotormafia.com/96koverhaul/43_newplugs.jpg

Trailing plug wires have blue boots.
Leading plug wires have black boots.

Make sure that the coil harness connectors are fully seated onto the coils.

rescueranger 12-02-04 08:24 PM

nope using taylor spiro pros

lopedl 12-02-04 08:32 PM

there is no way you could get the boot end mixed up, it couldn't possibly fit the coil packs.

Save yourself the headache and test for spark. Did you touch any of the wire harness, you might have cracked a wire. I know it sounds weird but the wires become very brittle and will break off. Check each plug for spark. If you have good spark in each wire its not your plugs or wiring. Just remember Those things are a son of a biscuit. A vacuum hose off will also cause the symptoms you've discribed, as would an ecu in limp mode.

GoodfellaFD3S 12-02-04 08:43 PM

Are you certain that you tightened all 4 plugs?

Also, although it may be obvious, I will say it anyway: don't drive the car like this. you can definitely pop the motor if you reversed a L and T plug wire, or reversed the Ts.

rescueranger 12-02-04 09:29 PM

yeah i tighted the plugs .. i dont know whats wrong .. fuck .. i gotta sleep now .. been at this all day and got work early in the morning.. i know the order is right .. i just re-did the wires again ... this time it seemed to fit more correctly ... but still having same problems .. car idles like crap .. and a shit load of exhaust fumes comes from the engine .. under the hood .. any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated .. could the spark plug wires be bad? what are the symptoms of a bad set of spark plug wires?

gambit023 12-02-04 09:40 PM

i doubt you're plugs are bad since they're new. try swapping out the wires back to stock. maybe it's the wires that are the culprit.

broken93 12-02-04 10:00 PM

Did you ever check the map sensor line?

TT_Rex_7 12-02-04 11:10 PM

I had a problem that seems to be very similiar to yours just a couple weeks ago. Turned out the hose that went to the bottem of the boost sensor right behind the tb attached to the firewall came off. If you did each wire 1 at a time I dont see anyone getting them mixed up due to the wire only being able to go to 1 spot wich I assume is what you did if you used that site for reference. Hope this helps!

dunno where the map sensor is :P

Rated R1 12-03-04 06:45 AM

It's the thing that says boost sensor on the firewall.
