Need help, coolant spilling from overflow
hey guys i Need some help and ideas i have coolant spilling from overflow tank while the engine is running it comes out of this little black o ring hole im not sure if there suppose to be something in there mine has nothing.
the car starts every-time in 3 Mississippi's or less and doesn't smoke no smell, idles fine no acceleration stumble. also i opened the filler-neck to look for bubbles while it was running and i didn't see any so i dont think its the water seals. http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...owtankedit.png |
That hole is there to allow excess coolant to overflow if you've overfilled. I assume you haven't changed your radiator or topped up the coolant recently?
The issue you have now is more likely than not a failure of a coolant seal. Combustion gasses are making their way past the damaged seal and pressurizing your coolant system causing the overflow. You're up for a rebuild, sorry. |
Or maybe he has a bad ast cap...?
|
i add coolant and then let it idle and and it starts to slowly come out the over flow reservoir. what specific type of cap do i need? ill try and get one, also does the thermostat have anything to do with this? should i pull it and inspect it?

Start by changing your pressure cap.
If it still happens you may have a bad coolant seal. -Geoff |
Also replace your coolant line to the reservoir. Mine overflowed as well and it was because that line had failed and would allow coolant in but not out
|
Are you having to add coolant? Is the buzzer going off? Sounds like the engine may be pushing coolant.
One more reason to delete the ASTs on these cars, makes troubleshooting much easier. |
What's the height of the AST? I had relocated mine too low after doing a v-mount setup and had similar problems. After deleting the AST, car has ran great with no problems
|
Replace the coolant filler cap and the AST cap. If that doesnt fix it, a bad coolant seal is most likely the culprit, as stated above.
I went through this last year. Hope you just need some new caps. |
I checked my caps they both look good but the one on my filler neck says 16psi and the one on the AST is .9 bar shouldn't the filler neck one be 13psi? is there a specialty type cap for these cars or will any work?
|
The filler neck does not require a pressure cap, when the overflow is connected to the AST. The filler neck is supposed to just be a flat cap unless the AST is deleted then a pressure cap is installed in that location with the FC filler neck.
So currently the 16 psi cap is doing nothing. A hydrocarbon test of the coolant system will tell you if the engine has a bad coolant seal. |
Same thing happened to me. There's too much air in your coolant system. Have you done anything to you coolant system lately? maybe a coolant flush and didn't purge the system correctly?
