Need help choosing a good FD.

Well to start off i have great news, i just sold my 98 prelude for $10k. Ive been in the market for an FD for a while now and i have found two that im strongly considering.
One is a 1994, just over 100k and its getting a new motor as we speak..err type
He wants $13k for it. No mechanical problems that i am aware of. He said it would come with greddy exhaust on it and some 5zigen wheels that were 9" out back..sorry no pics

The second one is up on auto trader...2nd RX-7
I called this guy and he told me that it got a new motor 23k ago. It has two things wrong with it though, he said that the AC leaks fluid so it doesnt blow cold and the pilot bearing needs to be replaced.

I just need some advice, i really like both cars. I preferr the black color but i dont know how much those two things would be to fix.
I realize im a little vauge on the details :(

Three bits of advise.

Spend $40 to $50 dollars and get the unlimited month of carfax reports.

Get a compression test done on the car.

Hook up a boost gauge. Stock boost should run 10 8 10

A compression test for this car is different from one on a piston car. You need a special tester. I paid a rotary specialist, a hundred bucks to come with me when I thought I found the car I wanted. He brought his rotary compression tester and a boost guage was hooked up to the car. I let him drive the car with the owner. when he returned he just smiled as he got out of the car. That money was well spent. Someone familuar with these cars is a must when sorting out the good from the bad.

I spent months reading through this forum, gathering information. At one point I posted as you did asking their opinion on a vehicle I nearly purchased and boy am I glad I listened. They told me to stay away. The car I eventually purchased is perfect.

If the car you're considering is not complete in any way,(i.e. broken or missing interior pieces, curbed rims, weak suspension) it can nickle and dime you to death. Good thing is there are enough forum members changing out interiors, removing a/c units, and every imaginable part that you should be able to find what you want.

I also want to mention that, if you can, go and meet the mechanic preparing the engine on the car. This will give you a chance to see the condition of the shop and get an idea of what sort of person is working on the car you are thinking about buying.

Take your time and follow car huggers advice. It is so easy to buy an rx7 that needs a motor rebuild within a month. Even if the motor is new. I am not sure how close Gotham racing is from you, but i would call them up and see if you can stop at their shop and hopefully learn a few things. Do a search with their name and see if you can get a phone number or something.

Thanks guys. Once the 1st car is done with the engine rebuild i could get a compression test done no problem since he is in arlington and im 30min away in colleyville. The 2nd car would be a little more difficult to do that with since its in ceder park...(austin)
ps: I asked the 2nd car guy to send me some more pics of it so ill post them when i get them.

Good luck with finding your car. Make sure you do not rush things. Buying an RX-7 may seem cheap but maintaining one is a different story :)
