Need Help! Catalytic Convertor for the 93 FD! Help please
 

Hello all,

After having my car into the shop (RPM Motorsports), it has become apparant that my catalytic convertor is deteriorating (old catalytic), and has pieces coming out of it.

With this being said, it is time to change it.

The problem is this, from what I know a OEM catalytic convertor is 1600$ CAD.

That is an insane amount of money for a cat. But from what I know and have heard, if I were put put an aftermarket Cat, then there is a good chance I would face Boost Creeping and possible detonation.

I have heard that the use of an APEXI controller will eliminate that risk, but last I checked they are like 800US.

Is there anyway around these two options? If I have to choose, I suppose the apexi route is cheaper and in the end more productive, since in the future I will undoubtedly have to replace the cat again, and would not feel like spending 1600$ time and time again.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this with some type of cost effectiveness in mind?

Is using a better condition catalytic an option? Or simply a waste of money?

Anyone explain how the APEXI would solve the boostcreep issue?

This is false. A midpipe can cause creep on an FD but creep is extremely unlikely with even a very high flowing cat. I have an SMB metallic cat (which is probably the highest flowing one out there) and have no creep.

Buy a used stock cat or a Bonez or, for a little more, an SMB.

How much do each of those suggestions go for?

Where do I find a stock used cat?

I think I found one, waiting on reply.

I am just worried that if I make a mistake here, bigger problems will occur, better to be safe than sorry.

Stock cat: $100-$200; Bonez ~$400; SMB ~$600.

Take off your stock cat, and shake out all of the broken pieces. Reinstall it. It is most likely that it will last for a while longer while still passing smog. This will give you some time to find a good deal or save up some money.

Any used oem cat you but will be 15 + years old, and will likely be in the same condition as yours before too long.
