Need Advice on rebuild...
 

I am sure this is a covered topic. I bought the 93 touring in august from a member of the forums. I got to drive the car, and the motor went. So, I have one housing with some scoring and one rotor which a sizable knick on one of the faces near an apex seal. The irons have been mildly street ported.

I have been thinking about either getting a reman from mazda, or having Kevin from RR rebuild it. I think he can get it done for around 1700 (I already have the rebuild gasket kit and all assorted seals (not apex though) Reman is going to cost be around 2200 from my dealership that I work for. I have heard the good and the bad with the remans, and have heard good things about Kevin...plus I like to support good quality forum members.

Any opinions appreciated. I am sure I will have to get a new housing and rotor...and maybe that will take that 1700 from Kevin up higher...

Is the good rotor housing ported? If not, then I would talk with Kevin and see if he has a decent housing/rotor that could be used. If your rotor housing is ported, then you'll have to think if you want to go through the trouble to get another housing, then have it ported, then have it built.

I would disassemble and reassemble any reman I recieved to verify tolerences and see. Send it off. My .02

If it was mildly ported, that indicates that it has been rebuilt before. How many miles are on the current rebuild? You can only reuse parts so many times before they are just wore out. What caused this engine to go?

I doubt Kevin can rebuild it for $1700 when you need, at a minimum, one new housing and a new rotor. It all depends on what you want....a rebuild with high mileage parts or a rebuild with new parts.

just get a reman motor.

I am thinking a reman is the way to go now. The motor was rebuilt 25k ago at Rotary Reliability and Performance in CA where the car is from. I do know that the rotor housings were brand new at that rebuild. I have no idea why the apex seal blew. I really wish I did. The way I see it is this...I will go with a reman more than likely, and go bone stock (apart from reliability mods) DP, koyo, AST. I sent my supra's injectors to RC engineering a few years back when I needed them cleaned, and they seems to do a great job. I think I am going to do the same thing this time so I know flow is what I need it to be.
