Is my RX7 a R1??

I regularly see people here talking about R1's and R2 rx7's.

Mine is a 94" Montego blue RX7 andit has got oil coolers at both sides of the bumper. Is that any indication to be an R1 as it was my guessing the double oil cooler setup was only from 97' cars on?

Ift his indicates me having an R1, are there other specific caracteristics to such a model? I noticed it requires more oil when changing the engine oil for example.

Thanks and sorry for the stupid question

Rx-7Addict 04-05-04 03:29 PM

Definantly not

no MBs were ever R1 (or R2 considering your car is a 94)

Mahjik 04-05-04 03:32 PM

I'm not sure about oversea's FD's, but the US Spec R1/R2's basically had these features (or lack there of):

No sun/moon roof
No rear wiper
No BOSE stereo
No cruise control
No leather seats

Additional oil cooler
R1 front spoiler and rear wing
R1 strut tower brace
Altered supsension

Only came in manuals, no automatics.

Speedworks 04-05-04 03:36 PM

whell, mine has sunroof, rear wiper,no Bose, has cruise control, HAs additional oil coolerno R1 front spoler but rear wing (RE amemiya), front and rear strubrace
Suspension?? no clue but damned it's stiff

Is a manual.

Can I check it buy the chassis number or anything like that? I mean something which will take away any doubt?

Does the R1 sign only indicate the equipment the car was delivered with or does it also include any mechanical/engine caracteristics?

Thanks for the quick responses.

fastcarfreak 04-05-04 03:48 PM

your car is not an r2. Unless the sunroof, and rear wiper and cruise was added after it was boughten.
adam

fastcarfreak 04-05-04 03:48 PM

its definately not an r1 because, r1 was only an option for 93 cars.

Sprockett 04-05-04 03:50 PM

sounds like it was modified a bit...maybe the previous owner bought a set of R1 oil coolers. Since it's a manual, that rules out the possibility of that other "oil cooler" being a transmission cooler - a lot of people get those confused. Those only came in ATXs though. Sounds weird, though - especially with no Bose (maybe other markets didn't get that option).

RX7INSAC 04-05-04 04:01 PM

Touring automatics come with dual oil coolers.

Basically, as already stated, if the sunroof is factory, it's a PEP/PEG model.

Sprockett 04-05-04 04:04 PM

Touring automatics come with dual oil coolers.
No they don't. Passenger's side is transmission cooler, Driver's side is oil cooler. I just f*cking said that.

Unless a previous onwer decided to paint it M8, it's not an R1/R2. I'm pretty sure that The R's never came in Montego Blue.

mazdaspeed00 04-05-04 04:49 PM

its not a r1/r2 because thoes factory add ons were no offered at the dealer.

mad_7tist 04-05-04 04:57 PM

no sell it to me for 5 dollars. i will pick it up later

neit_jnf 04-05-04 05:02 PM

I thought R1/2 were only available in Black, Red and Silver, and Yellow

diablone 04-05-04 10:12 PM

If the vehicle did not come from the US, pretty much everything being said here does not matter as these comments are relating to US-Spec RX-7's. I believe there has been a post from an overseas member that did have a Montego Blue R1.

TracyRX7 04-05-04 10:36 PM

Off the RX-7 FAQ this applies to US spec R1/R2s:

2.4.3 "R" models

The "R" model is the performance model, and does not have cruise control.
The "R" model's option package consists of:

- Rear spoiler and front air dam
- Dual engine oil coolers
- Dedicated front brake air ducts
- Special suspension tuning
- Front shock-tower support brace
- Z-rated high-performance steel-belted radial tires

Black Black Tan Red
Cloth Leather Leather Leather

Vintage Red X - - -
Brilliant Black X - - -
Competition Yellow Mica X - - -

Not available in Silver Stone Metallic or Montego Blue Metallic.

I know a lot of people add dual oil coolers (or a much larger single one) to their Touring models. Its a good reliability upgrade if you do a lot of backroad/long duration track running.

The car is 100% standard off factory. I know the owner and he has never, never changed anything to it.

As already mentioned, I live in Belgium (small country above France) and only 19 FD's were ever imported between 93' and 94'. To which specs they were build, I do not know and that's what I try to find out.

Paint= originall
no add-ons off any kind which was not offered from the factory.
I mentioned the RE Amemiya rear spoiler as they have one that resembles the most to it.
It's the flat fishy kinda spoiler you see on most RX7's (not the 99' spec spoiler)

OK. There is a bunch of conclusions that don't apply to Europe. From what I read in Brian Long's RX-7 book, Europe did not get model choices at all. There was no R1/R2/Touring/Base for UK and Europe at all. All they got was essentially a R-Touring model.

Gearing was the same as in other markets, with fifth at .702. Suspension tuning was between US Base/Touring and R-1, shod in R1 Bridgestone Expedias.

(I hypothesize that offering a stiffer suspension standard was to make it good for Autobahn flying, which any European enthusiast would be damn sure to do as soon as possible :) :) :))

Front tower bar and twin oil coolers standard. Body was R-1 similar as well, with brake ducts and rear spoiler (no front lip?). Mudguards were standard (option in US), but always finished in black, not body color. Leather, cruise control, 100W Panasonic 5 speaker system radio/cassete. Headlight washers and leveling facility(??), rear washer/wiper, sunroof, drivers airbag and cruise control.

Alarm was not standard, nor sill plates, mats, roofracks nor rear window visor.

Color options were same as US, but no CYM (Competition Yellow Mica). All interior leather was black.

That is for 93.

The following comments apply to the 94 Japan/US, but standard changes across models would probably make it to Europe, where applicable.

Front bump stops were longer, with back ones going from rubber to urethane. Shock size increased. Front strut tower bar standard on all models in Japan. Rear crossmember modified. Different paint on interior, new speedo, trim rings from chrome to black for most models, bigger armrest (ashtray now option), and switch to R134a for AC. Sunroofs went to glass, R2 was softer than R1 with Pirelli P0s instead of Bridgestone Expedias. Base car got map pockets in seats and dual airbags.

So to answer the original question, yes, you basically have a loaded R2. But you don't technically because it was never offered as such, and you are missing the cloth interior.

Speedworks 04-06-04 12:36 PM

Well it has the black mudguards on for sure, it has a 5 speaker rdio/cassettte hifi system, leveling option on the headlights, rear wiper is on, sunrof but no glass, it has driver airbag and CC.

However. Due to the European emission regulation the car has only 240HP standard. This may be in the ECu or some other restriction that has been build in.
It hasn't been on the dyno yet, but I will do it as soon as I have done the oil/filter changes and next time that there's a dyno day here

esebueno 04-06-04 12:39 PM

what about one with no spoiler, no sunroof, no wiper, tan leather, no lip....just a low-end base?

360spinner 04-06-04 09:03 PM

DOesn't sound like you have an R2 cause it could not be an R1 being 94 and all montego blue another dead give away. Do you have a red strut tower brace? How about cloth seats, and thought you said that there were no mods done then said you had a Kamari spoiler??? And no sun roofs man body needs to be rigid on a sports model! You got like 1/4 of an R2

PVerdieck 04-06-04 10:47 PM

It is probably a late 93 model sold as a 94, so it has the steel sunroof. No, he has a R1/R2 spoiler, he just calls it a fish spoiler.

Correct, the Euro horspower rating is lower, but I think that is more the measuring system than anything else. I think you are also electronically limited/governed to 156MPH.

Speedworks 04-07-04 05:46 AM

I checked the paperwork on the car and indeed, the car was purchased somewhere November 1993 but officially registred in 1994

Damn, thought it would be far easier to find out the correct spec of my car...
