My own intercooler and intake set up

3 Attachment(s)
The primary turbo gets nothing but cold air, it sits inside above the right front air dam to prevent water entry,it has the same size K+N filter with the secondary. The secondary turbo gets it share of cool air once the car is moving (removing and relocating the coolant reservoir tank created a passage of air flow staright up the K+N filter). meaning you dont need cool air for the secondaries anyway when car is starting from at stop. Yes. it is a XS power intercooler that i fabricated to form sort of a V mount set up, the radiator was not flipped, it still sits on it's stock location only lowered a bit so i can get more flow from my custom air duct for the intercooler. It also alowed me to use a regular sized battery(those small odyssey batteries never lasted) but i did had to make a custom bettery tray for it. Other than that this has been my best cool air set up and it was the cheapest i also still have my condenser. My intercooler stays cool thanks to the sealed air duct, only of course right after driving and pop the hood right away.I know it's as good as a front mount please no more debates about front mount and stock location... because I designed my car to be a street car meaning i dont have to worry about debris hitting the face of the intercooler core or having too much pressure loss. Im also able to use the factory Y pipe with this set up as seen on the pics. I hope this helps anybody with a low budget and want an efficient set up. I will try to post more pics in details for the aluminum intercooler duct, intake, and battery tray.

Wow, that looks pretty frickin sweet man. I like it. I'm gonna be working on my car over the winter, i have a downpipe, de-cat, and a large IC to fit - you're giving my ideas :)

Looks awesome. Any data on intake temps?

f150rx7 10-20-06 03:45 AM

sorry i havent proven or collected data of my intake temp, but im positive its as cold as it gets... for the primaries of course. I tried to take pics on the primary K+N but it's hard now that the front bumper is on. but I gurantee you it looks nice in there complete with brackets. It was alot of work and trial and error with the pipe bends but it was worth it. I just bought these pipes from ebay in pieces with various bends and pieced it together.

nice placement of the coolant overflow, what about aluminum though? so it doesn't crack from heat wear like stock ast's do :)

btw love the ic duct :icon_tup:

sevensheaven 10-20-06 05:59 AM

I like it! It's a nice change from what we normally see. Doesn't appear to be a high budget mod, yet looks nicely done. Props to you!

KINETIK_FD3S 10-20-06 07:00 AM

cool setup i like to see custom work like that, we both have the ast in the same spot, did you think about welding the intercooler pipes to the endtanks? great work.

ptrhahn 10-20-06 07:36 AM

Pretty cool. I guess you don't have the passenger side oil cooler then?

Heisenberg 10-20-06 09:41 AM

Thats a really nice setup. Good job on the fab work.Where did you get your piping and couplers?

SLOASFK 10-20-06 09:45 AM

Very nice...:) I want a kit!

dradon03 10-20-06 09:53 AM

Intercooler piping is as short as possible.
Air Intakes are as far away from the engine as possible.
AST is at the highest point possible.

Props good job,

Alex

Looks like a nice job, and well thought out :). I really like that you have kept the battery in the front of the car, and have moved it more toward the passenger side. This will help to distribute weight more evenly, and should improve handling a little bit.

Very well done!!!!!

RE-Amemiya 10-20-06 11:04 AM

Very nice, can't say i've seen a set-up like that before with the battery on the other side. Nice work!

CarbonR1 10-20-06 12:03 PM

Nice job, looks good.

RotaryDreamz 10-20-06 01:05 PM

i like how you relocated your coolant overflow tank....i was thinking about doing something like that, but didnt know where to start... big props bro...

Speed of light 10-20-06 01:25 PM

Very nice. Fresh thinking. I've been wondering when someone was going to tilt the IC forward for a SMIC setup.-- I've mocked it up and It improves a lot of things.

airborne 10-20-06 01:38 PM

Much credit for an original idea. Do you have a vented hood? That would be an awesome complement.

rynberg 10-20-06 03:16 PM

Looks like a lot of nice custom work....you should look into running a 51R size battery sometime in the future....it will take 10 lbs off the front end and give more room. The 51R batt has enough juice for daily driving unless you have a hard core stereo.

Nice job.

RX7LINK 10-20-06 03:18 PM

that's how FD's should've been made. good job

scotty305 10-20-06 03:59 PM

That looks like great work, although I've had nothing but good luck with my Odyssey PC680 battery.

Have you tried adding a fan to pull air through the IC? You would be surprised at how slowly air flows through the engine bay with a stock hood. Howard Coleman used a windspeed meter, and measured 1.5-3mph through his IC with a stock hood, and 6-8 mph through his IC with a vented hood:
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/downpipe-your-engine-compartment-cool-loovers-other-heat-fixes-448589/

I've installed a vented hood on my car, but running the radiator fans still pulls more air through the radiator than cruising at 80mph without the fans on. Fans on my oil cooler and IC will be among the next few mods I'd like to try on my car.

looks good.....nice job... :icon_tup:

f150rx7 10-20-06 04:29 PM

your right, a vented hood is my last step. But I want to keep to stock hood and make a custom vent, just figureing out a way to design it to where it will actually work and doesn't look to agressive.

prrex4ever 10-20-06 08:30 PM

Thinking outside the box. Awesome idea and work. Congrats!

rajeevx7 10-20-06 10:03 PM

What, are you trying to make it easy to put back to stock in a hurry?

Put that battery between the wheelbase somewhere like real sportscars. Also, you took a huge chunk out of your bumper opening, so how are you compensating? I did the same thing with a healthy SMIC scoop BUT I pulled the mouth WAY open.

Of course, cancel both ideas if your answer to the question is yes.

SiKoPaThX 10-21-06 02:42 AM

Dude. Looks excellent. Did you really do that by yourself?

f150rx7 10-21-06 02:18 PM

rajeevx7 your right, i did not want to stay too far away from the stock form..., as for the battery i did not want to relocate too far away because extending cables is kinda risky unless you do it right, i just did not want to worry about more corrosion or create more potential electrical problems. Most of all ,im not going all out like you it's already a sportscar enough to me.
