My New '94 RX-7 - Oh, the Drama!

First off, I just wanted to pay a special thanks to my brother David, over at Lethal. He spent countless hours on my car in such a short amount of time, to try and get it running by the time I came home for Leave during New Years.

I'd also like to thank Kyle, who without his awesome welding skills, my car also wouldn't be what it is today.

My brother is so meticulous and his attention to detail is one of a kind. You won't find a mechanic anywhere who is more concerned about your own car than my brother. I'm proud to have him as my brother.

For the initial setup, I was going to be going with a 13B-RE, the Cosmo 2-rotor motor. The intake manifold piping diameter is roughly 10mm larger than the standard 13B-REW manifold.

As my Dyno pic from Lethal will show, the 13B-RE is capable of producing more power at RPM's past 6,500....However, the 13B-REW that is currently in the car, produced significantly more torque and horsepower at LOWER RPM's...which for a rotary, is a definite plus.

Pay no attention to that GT40 on that Z28 /w 345's on the back. ^_^

Dirty Turbonetics 62-1 turbo! >_<

Nice and clean!!

Custom-fabricated fuel-rail. Go Kyle gooooo!

On the Dyno @ Lethal, awaiting tuning from Roy.

YoshiFD3S 01-10-09 07:52 PM

BUT THEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Trouble struck.

After being tuned by Roy, as the car was sitting there idling....it died....and wouldn't start back up.

The next day at the shop, after testing air, fuel, and spark...a simple compression test showed low compression on the rear rotor.

It didn't help that the diaphragm of my Turbosmart 45mm waste-gate had a tear in it...causing unsafe levels of boost during the initial dyno tuning, before I had came home. By the time we had replaced the diaphragm and put her back on the dyno, it was too late. :[

....SON OF A........lol...I never even got to drive it with the RE in it. :[

SO!!!!! It was off to JHOT Imports, out of Augusta...to pick up a fresh, low-mileage 13B-REW motor. The standard FD motor. No one in town had a 13B-RE in stock.

Yaaaaaaaaay.... -_-;;
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1871small.jpg

Thank goodness for Verizon's GPS...the Mapquest directions SUCKED, and don't even get me started on how useless then iPhone GPS is!
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1872small.jpg

"What's that, Hamilton? Is that a cop behind us??? Uh ohhhh...."
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1870small.jpg

79 in a 65....ALOT better than a 92 in a 65, which was how fast he was actually going.... OOPS! ^_^;; Sorry Hamilton!!
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1863small.jpg

On the way back from JHOT with our precious cargo!
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1876small.jpg

My girlfriend was such a little trooper! Coolest girlfriend, ever!
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1901small.jpg

While we were gone, my brother was hard at work, removing the 13B-RE.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...902small-1.jpg

GOOOOOOOOD BYE "rats-nest" and all stock parts!!
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3.../ratsnest2.jpg

So here she is! After spending the first half of my Leave period at the shop, and a few pissed off girlfriend moments later....
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1951small.jpg

All done and ready for a final tune by Roy.

The 13B-REW versus the 13B-RE, utilizing the "Average Guy" roller weight setting on Lethal's Dyno.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...EVS13B-REW.jpg

Observe the significant horsepower and torque differences. The RE puts out slightly higher horsepower at higher RPM's, however the REW starts its powerband and torque curve much sooner thanks to larger exhaust ports, resulting in a faster turbo spool.

YoshiFD3S 01-10-09 07:53 PM

We decided to try seeing what kind of #'s the car would put out on a standard Dynojet Dyno. So we hit up Dynolab in Marietta and here's the difference.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1979small.jpg

So if you look back at the Dyno comparison from Lethal..You'll see about a 50hp difference. If you're looking for those bigger #'s, and you're tired of being butt-hurt by Lethal mean dyno....ask them to put the dyno on the "Nice Guy" setting. It'll put out #'s equal to that of a standard free-spinning Dynojet dyno.

Okay, so I got a little camera friendly with my new toy! Sorry I don't have any Photoshoot quality pics, like all you rich bastards. I don't make THAT much money in the Navy! ;D

SOOOO....Happy Birthday, Christmas, Hannukkah, Congrats on Making E-5 to MEEEEEE!!!! LOL
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1813small.jpg

My girlfriend was happy to finally sit in it, too. haha!
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...816small-1.jpg

Team Lethal. REPRESENT!!!
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1957small.jpg

LOVIN' my '99 Front w/ H4 Bulbs!
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1961small.jpg

And my '99 Tails..JDM tite! lol
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1836small.jpg

Sex.
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3..._1807small.jpg

So all in all....The car runs BEAUTIFULLY. The 11psi is VERY conservative and will help keep it as "reliable" as possible...if that's even a word you can say in the same sentence as "rotary". lol

It's currently sitting in my mom's garage in Roswell, but it'll be up at the shop at least a few times, I'm sure. Advertising. :P

So again, I just wanna say thanks to my brother David, and all the guys at Lethal for helping me get my dream car up and running!

When I re-enlist in < 2 years, I think I'll go ahead and go through with my 2JZ project. Till then, I'll just be cleaning it up a little bit. Touch up the paint, a little body work, a few interior pieces...and definitely throw on my WORKS Emotion XD9's on her as soon as I ship her to San Diego, in April-ish of this year! 235's aren't NEAR wide enough to keep this beast under control! XD

I was even able to get the vanity license plate I wanted for it, too.

"1337 FD"

1337 is actually my NEC ("MOS Code") within the Navy! Go figure! ^_^

Thanks for your time, fellas!

looks real nice.

zack4173 01-10-09 09:21 PM

Very impressive amount of work you guys got done. The car looks great keep us posted on any updates its obvious that you do good work.

FDWarrior 01-10-09 09:25 PM

^ Quite possibly the fastest build thread ever. Nice car, I remember when this car was up for sale. I love the white with 99 spec front. If you still have the RE you could make the REW a RE very easy. If you switch the uim and lim to the RE ones, you have an RE. The porting is different to I think, but if your engine is ported then it makes no difference. Super nice car man, hope you have fun with it.

slow_talon 01-10-09 09:29 PM

Really nice can and great numbers too...

dynorx7 01-10-09 10:04 PM

Looks great! Can't wait to see it with new wheels

caredden 01-10-09 11:07 PM

Nice Job!

OP,

You and your brother had quite the busy leave/holiday period! You guys did some incredible work in an extremely short period of time.

Congrats on getting it all done and beautiful car!

Charlie

YoshiFD3S 01-11-09 01:24 AM

Thanks so much for the compliments, guys!!

The car was SUCH a blast to drive!!!!

The Power FC is SO handy too, I tell you what! lol

I'd like to pick up a Defi boost gauge, and a wideband AFR gauge to replace the cheesy Autometer boost/air-fuel gauge.

All in all though, the body is INCREDIBLY straight, and aside from maybe a re-spray and some clear-coat...the condition of the car was WELL worth the price! I was very very satisfied!

haha.. Again, thanks so much for the compliments guys! This car is everything I wanted and more!

And it's always fun to hear your girlfriend be like "Oh my God, I want to have sex in this car right now!"

bahahahahaha!!

((yes, I'm slightly drunk...^_^))

fendamonky 01-11-09 10:59 AM

Lol! Grats on getting everything running man! And grats on PO2!! (I'm up for 1st in the spring ^_^) Oh... and your girls a real cutie :bigthumb:

YoshiFD3S 01-11-09 09:29 PM

hahaha!

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I made FC2 off the September exam. First time up!

Choose your rate, choose your fate, right? lol :D

I'm still stoked I got "1337 FD" as my vanity plate.

hahaha

XD

:fawk: Lol, I didn't put second on until *after* I re-enlisted the first time. 'Course... having the Chief hate you and give nothing but promotable doesn't help (even though I am better at the job than he is)..

Choose your rate, choose your fate, right? lol :D
Most def, I thought you guys were all 6-yo's now as well, so you got that shit with a quickness! (I worked in the JIC on my LHA).

Actually doing my PSC paperwork right now, transferring to SD right about the same time you are. We'll have to take the 7's out for a play before I deploy!

mrb63083 01-12-09 07:40 AM

Super clean FD, buddy! Nice work. :icon_tup:

Supernaut 01-12-09 09:56 AM

flyboyjuge 07-18-09 10:55 AM

holy crap...thats my old fd! I did have a thread on here a long time ago about the paint process. glad to see its still on the road.

MakoRacing 07-18-09 01:54 PM

Nice looking car ya got there :bigthumb:

YoshiFD3S 07-19-09 11:29 PM

It's been a while since I've updated this thing!!

But it's nice to have my own thread! XD

Some updates...

My vanity plate finally came in. :P

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...S/IMG_3012.jpg

I picked up a Kenwood DVD/Navigation double-din unit. Fit perfect and looks GREAT in an FD!

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...S/IMG_3016.jpg

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...S/IMG_3017.jpg

I also ditched whatever POS short-shifter was in my FD and bought an RE-Anemiya short-shifter out of my brother's boss' show-FD. Shifts like butter! :D

First few days, just chilled at the shop, and spent time with friends:

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...S/IMG_3026.jpg

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...S/IMG_3027.jpg

Had a couple interesting race encounters on the highway too.

I raced some older E36 3-series that had a Chevy 350 in it....I DESTROYED it. hehe...no vids of that one, except on my brother's POS phone. :P

Also ran into brother's friend Matt in a very clean SR'd S14. Here's me @ 11psi still versus him:

On the way to the movies one night, we also ran into "Decker" off 240Atlanta.com and Import Atlanta.. 11.8s 2JZ'd S14 240SX. Fast...

Run #1 (I think he started in 4th...the only reason I even pulled >_<)

Run #2 (Totally owned. lol XD)

The link below was Decker's For Sale thread for his motor/mods on SupraForums...just to give you guys an idea as to how fast he is/was..

http://www.supraforums.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=496025

SO!!!! At that point it was decided...

It was back to the Bat Cave....AKA Lethal Injection Motorsports. My brother's shop out of Alpharetta, GA.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...S/IMG_3120.jpg

We turned up the boost to a solid 15.1psi which it seemed to handle beautifully. The air/fuel map needed some driveability tuning to get rid of some burping/sputtering at certain RPM's/throttle %'s...but we got it just about completely smoothed out by the time I left.

I don't have a new Dyno for some reason, but it made 346rwhp on the Mustang Dyno on the "Mean Guy" setting, which should equate to roughly 390-400rwhp on a standard Dynojet.

Hooray!

I didn't have much time to play with it after the new tune, before I had to go home, but on a drive back from my friend's house, there was this older gentleman that was teasing like he wanted to go, but didn't...so...

http://videos.streetfire.net/video/D...Man_682385.htm

Anywho, some other updates!!

I also ordered the Burnout wide-body front and rear fender flares:

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...IMG_1551-1.jpg

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...IMG_1583-1.jpg

As well as the VIS Racing '99 carbon fiber spoiler:

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...r99Spoiler.jpg

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...rad-287918.jpg

I'd like to pick up a rear-diffuser like the one shown in the above pic...And really, aside from that, the only other visual upgrade I'd like to do is get some more aggressive rims. I have been finding myself overly obsessed with black-polished Works Meister S1's, as shown here:

https://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e...Q/IMG_5306.jpg

mmmmmmmmzzzzzz......

After deciding to go with the Burnout kit, I decided I wanted to go ahead and go with some 19's for more of a show look.

Right now, I'm saving up the funds to pay for Kyle at Lethal to go ahead and start on the body work and paint.

I plan on going home in a few months for a visit, then shipping it soon afterwards if I can afford to do so.

I have been trying to sell my Works Emotion XD9 rims, because the 18X8/18X9 fitment just doesn't seem aggressive enough anymore for the look I'm trying to achieve. I've got a For Sale thread on them if anyone's interested.

Anyways!

Thanks for the support guys! I look forward to providing further updates and completion pictures after the paint and body work!

ImraanK 07-20-09 01:54 PM

Nice man...Good to see her going again :)..

I have the same wheels 2 hehe
