My FD's 5th gear + other things are fixed!

Good news everyone...my FD is finally home after an extensive tranny repair (5th gear + 2,3, bearings and shafts). It appeared the horrid noise was coming from a worn teeth near the idling gear (no bigger than pencil tip). She shifts as smooth as butter in 5th and even smoother in all other gears. I'll work with engines..but not the tranny so I had it repaired at a Mazda dealership here...luckily, a 10+ certified rotary mechanic was on born (thanks, Fred n' Jamie!). Talking to Jamie, and he contacted Cam at Pettit...he was unsure of the noise too. I know, I know...I read some stories about Mazda dealerships as worst enemies to FD's but Fred was awesome and welcomed during whole duration of repairing it for me to show what went wrong...he gave me all the parts that cracked and broke. Aside from that, though the photos show nothing dealing with the tranny, I figure it be nice to show some anyways (needs a wash!). The old video before it was repaired is 10MB...the repaired tranny video is 20MB and shows it cranking up...no more rattling! Check it out!

Thanks. I'm happy she's back. I know there are other future issues I will have to work on but for now, I'm happy she's home. She has H&R springs. Not too fond of wheels but came with the car. Putting in Koyo Radiator among others soon. :D

cmartinp28 07-15-05 12:23 AM

just curious... how mcuh did this whole rebuild cost you?

riptor 07-15-05 12:52 AM

im curious as well cuz i think mine is about due..:D

JConn2299 07-15-05 03:41 AM

Yeah, you left out the most important part. How much did it cost? I'm going to guess $800. Maybe we should have a Price Is Right contest.

JConn2299 07-15-05 03:42 AM

I know I may be low, but it seems he was on such good terms with the dealer, I'm figuring maybe they cut him a break.

dgeesaman 07-15-05 03:54 AM

I'd like to see those photos of the damaged parts, if possible.

Dave

We Did The Best We Could With Pricing But This Is No Easy Or Cheap Job. But It Is One That Is Worth Every Penny!

Sgtblue 07-15-05 10:43 AM

Ah yes. I remember how nice it was after fixing (just) the 5th gear synchro on my car.
LOL, but like trying to de-program Pavlov's dog...it took me a while not to automatically grit my teeth whenever I shifted to fifth. ;)

These Are Really Some Great Transmissions In These Cars, As Long As It Has Not Been Abused. Which Unfortunately Is Not The Case For A Number Of Us Here In The World Of The Fd. Mine Personally Is The Stocker From 93 And Its As Smooth As Silk With A Short Throw And Mobil 1 Lubricant. My Rotary Tech Here At The Shop Has Been With Mazda Close To Thirty Years And Is Originally From California When The Fd Came Out And He Says Fdzero's (tam) Fd Was The First Tranny He Has Had To Basically Rebuild. So That I Think Says Alot About The Transmissions In These Vehicles. Just Remember If You Want It To Run/operate A Long Time Then Service It Regularly And Dont Beat On It Too Much...

Venom2U 07-15-05 11:36 AM

I still dont see a price put out there.

DVSseven 07-15-05 12:05 PM

Well Im Not At Liberty To Discuss Prices That Is A Privacy Concern...

Venom2U 07-15-05 12:22 PM

So if i ask you " how much to do mine just like that" you wouldent tell me?

That seems like a load....................................

Or dose your shop just do the work first, THEN figure out what it cost after the fact?

PS. I wasent asking for the guys bill, so it not a "privacy consern".

Force13B 07-15-05 12:58 PM

Was it only making noise when the clutch was out? I've been trying to get a rebuild kit for my FD for like 2 months. I really would like to know how much it was if you can PM me or something that would be great. I have to rev match my 5th gear so that i don't grind. I have also lifted it up and tracked the noise down to the main shaft bearing but i figured while i'm at it fix it all. Anyways would appriciate some details if you could get back to me. Thanks.

Sure sounds like somebody was. I'd also be hesitant to post a price. Invariably someone is going to comment that the repair was too high or low, even though there is no way to tell from a forum thread exactly what might be required to fix your transmission, or anyone elses for that matter.

Why? How is he suppose to diagnose your transmission problems over the internet and give you an accurate price?

Will post photos of the bag of stuff that went out. The noise rattling was different from the 5th gear syncro going bad so those were separate jobs/labor. Most importantly, she's back home. :D

kraked 07-15-05 03:13 PM

I'm curious too now, to know how much the tranny job cost

DVSseven 07-15-05 05:08 PM

Venom, First Of All Chill Out. Yes I Could Probably Give You An Idea Of What It Would Cost But Its Very Hard To Say Until You Get Into The Tranny And See Exactly Whats Going On. Like Fdzero, He Came In Needing A 5th Gear Synchro But Once We Tore Into The Tranny We Found That Someone Else Had Been Inside Prior To Us. Once Inside We Also Found More Issues We Had To Deal With, We Almost Basically Had To Rebuild The Whole Tranny. Now You See What Im Saying. So Its Hard To Diagnose Something If You Do Not Have It In Front Of You. If You Were Looking To Have Us Rebuild The Tranny Your Probably Looking At Anywhere From $1500 On Depending On Its Integrity.... Thanks For The Post Though....

DVSseven 07-15-05 05:16 PM

Sgtblue, Thanks For The Clarification. The Biggest Rules In The World Of Car Repair(service Advisor) Is Never Diagnose The Problem Yourself, Let The Tech. Do That, That Is His Job. Only Communicate The Symptoms That The Customer Is Telling You To The Tech. Second, Never Give An Informal Estimate Or Give An Exact Time It May Take To Do The Repairs, Usually Once You Tear Into The Vehicle You Will Find More Underlying Problems.
As Was The Case With Fdzero, Once We Got Into The Tranny Of His Car We Found Underlying Problems Which Actually Caused Us To Have To Order Special Tools To Do The Job With.....

kraked 07-17-05 03:23 AM
