My FD Rats Nest Nightmare - Actual Rats!

I was storing my FD at my parents house covered with a tarp under a walnut tree during the summer while I collect the parts needed to get it back on the road. I went last week to bold the hood and fenders on so I could drive it home and put it in the garage and when I opened the hood I saw a bunch of leaves. I heard movement in the leaves and a RAT poked it's head up and looked at me like WTF are you doing in my house! I tried to take a picture of him but he took off, but I took some pics of the nest while I was cleaning it out. He ate a bunch of wiring and tubing but I guess it could have been worse?

Holy shit. I don't know if you'll ever find the full extent of the damage...

Wow, and good luck man.

i would have messed that damn rat up if he did that to my car!

DaleClark 01-23-07 11:15 AM

Damn, man that sucks! That's gonna take some serious work to sort out!

If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure the rat didn't have any fun passing that silicone vacuum tubing through his system :).

Get that rat out of there, find a way to prevent him from coming back (mothballs? I dunno) and start cleaning up the mess and assess what needs to be done.

It's been treated better the rest of it's life, I just needed to store it there for a couple months while I made room in the garage since I got an 07 STi. Luckily so far most of the wires are from stuff that wasn't being used ie the hookups for the Profec A which I didn't like anyway. Luckily I had already removed most of my smog and sequential turbo control lines so that gave them less tubes to eat. So far as I can tell no essential wiring was damaged and only 2 tubes, one to the fuel pressure regulator and one to the turbo control I think.
I'm going to go over there at lunch today and continue to clean it out. I tried grabbing the rat but he disappeared.

That almost makes it tempting to leave a battery connected while its in storage. Teach that damn rat a lesson.

Hopefull you get it all straightened out soon.

dubulup 01-23-07 11:42 AM

damn son...that sucks. Good luck!

where is your IC duct?

VegasFD 01-23-07 11:48 AM

That sucks man. Wasn't there someone a few months ago that had a similar problem?

mirabile 01-23-07 11:56 AM

Thats nuts dude. Itll make a great story when you get it back running though.

lol...turn the car on and close the hood. once you see smoke and smell something burning....you will know where the rat is.....high under hood temps are finally good for something :)

Jedon 01-23-07 12:15 PM

My IC duct is in my garage, don't worry I do have one :-)
No way am I starting it until I get the FPR hose hooked back up!

THI 01-23-07 12:19 PM

I don't think it's a rat but probably a small squirrel or chipmunk because of the collection of nuts in that nest. Nonetheless, I feel your pain...

HKNY 01-23-07 12:34 PM

same thing happened to my grand cherokee, the fucker ate the main harness right where it came through the firewall.

OMG thats very nasty. what did you do?

dgeesaman 01-23-07 04:20 PM

Well I guess we finally need to add "rat in rats nest" as another possible turbo troubleshooting step.

:)

If you're right, and you didn't lose any essential wiring, I'll be quite surprised and you'll be really lucky. If you needed new harnesses, you're talking 2 grand easy.

Funk :\ . glad it didnt start on any rotors, housings or turbos.

buzen 01-23-07 05:17 PM

It will be really awesome if you could take a pic of the rat somehow... and then post it here... it should/will become part of the documentation on the rat's nest :) Or can someone do a good job at photoshop with it?

Jedon 01-23-07 05:21 PM

My wife is a wizard with Photoshop, I'll have her do it!

preludesh2000 01-23-07 05:22 PM

sorry to here that... good luck..

and moth balls will save your ass next time ...

my grandfather popped his hood on his truck and had a posome under the hood...said it scared the shit out of him...

Cats are the best rodent protection available. Where my FD is currently sitting there are 7 resident outdoor cats. :) One of them even sleeps on the sunroof and stands guard. It has a cover on it too.
