Ive been driving it for a week now. This is my routie if you will...lol

I wake up before i do anything i go out side take my spare key and turn on the car. Lock it up and get ready for work. It sits for about 10 mins before i drive it so it can warm up. I get to work which is a 20 to 30 minute drive 75% highway and 25% streets driving. Depending on how i drove the FD i'll let it sit 2 mins if i just drove speed limit the whole way without hitting boost and when i do get on it I let it sit for 5 or 6 mins before i turn it off. The car sits till about noon if i decide to take my car out for lunch i start it up and wait 3 to 5 mins before i drive it i don't go too far for my job for lunch so i get back and let it sit for 2 mins the turn it off. Once i get out of work i let the car get to normal operating temp then leave this takes about 2 mins. I drive home again depending on my driving i'll let it sit anywhere from 3 to 6 mins also after i turn it off i leave the key in the ignition and let the fans run for 5 mins reguardless of how i drove the car..

The reason for me typing that was to see if you guys thinks thats over doing it on taking care of the car since i don't have a turbo timer yet. or am i not doing enough to let the car cool down..let me know what ya'll think?

An other thing is my car smokes? I don't know what it is but i do know that the Oil pressure sending unit is bad and needs to be replaced could that be why it smokes so much. The smoke is a white smoke and its not to thick it seems looks like its burning oil but im not 100% sure what possible problems? Also my idle is low but with the AC on it'll idle at 800-900 rpm. My normal idle is around 600-700. The vaccum box is unplugged could that be the problem? Any help would be appreciated on any of these matters but other then those things the car is great. :D Thanks for your help

Nice looking car.

No need to warm up the car for more than 1 minute. Just drive it easy for at least 7or 8 minutes before hard acceleration. Drive it easy for the last 2 minutes before you arrive at your destination, and shut it off. Do not let it sit and idle.

Do not buy a turbo timer. They are for stupid kids. Don't do it.

Spend some time reading here before posting. You can learn a lot.

when does your car put out the smoke?

my car used to put out white smoke between shifts, like if i put it into N amd coasted to a stop. it was my turbos, once those got fixed the smoke went away.

ReodDai 06-24-04 06:32 PM

Wow I like how your taking care of it. I'm impressed.

Congrats on your FD.

1)- One minute of idle time before engine shut down should suffice.

2)- When does it smoke?? At start-up? AT WOT?? At secondary transition?? Please elaborate.

3)- Not a good thing to have the (any) vacuum/air pressure box unplugged. That may explain abnormal idle and/or boost issues. Do a search for the vacuum line diagram and figure out which line(s) need to be connected back to the box.

It doesn't smoke when i start it up. after i drive it a little bit it smokes while sitting kinda like someone smoking a cig. but its constant and once i drive it stops smoking or from what i can see only when its sitting it smokes

Meiogirl 06-24-04 07:08 PM

ya thats what mine was doing. it smoked when the car wasnt given gas.
hmm... ill see if i can find some pics of the areas where you should look and see if you see oil near the turbos.

http://www.fushca.netfirms.com/images/primturbo.bmp

the white arrow points to the ypipe. follow that down and it connects to the turbos, the yellow arrow points where it connects to the primary. you should be able to find the similar part for the secondary more towards the firewall.
i had alot of oil residue at this junction, i dont know how much is 'acceptable'.

I'm more impressed by that mansion of a house in the background. Geesh. :)

I think you're highly overdoing. You just need to warm it up for a minute or so then drive it easy 5 minutes before you should start driving hard. And after driving it hard, drive it with out boosting for a couple minutes before shutting off the car. Oh and turbo timers are just for looks.

so your telling me that buying a turbo timer is just a waste of money? Hey thats sounds good to me:D Ok so lets say i race the FD how long should i let it sit before I turn it off?

np, actually though if you do see alot of build up there, it means your seals are bad. the turbos have to come out and be rebuilt :(

Just drive the car without boosting for a few minutes before you park and shut off the car. Or just wait in the car for a minute or two, then shut off your engine.

If you're talking about racing on a track, you'll normally get a "cool-down" lap which should bring you back down to normal operating temperatures...

I usually idle for a minute or so, then shut down...

On the street, as others have said.. unless it's REALLY cold, just drive it easy until your temps are at normal, and stay off boost for a couple of minutes before turning off...

wReX 06-25-04 01:29 AM

Yeah, you don't want to let the car sit at idle for too long, it will aid in fouling out your spark plugs. I usually drive easy(no boost) for a few min after a hard run then let the car idle for 2-3min with hood poped open and the fans on.

Please, finish up all the reliability mods especially since there is 145k miles on most of the parts. AST, aluminim radiator, silicone vac lines, inspect the fuel pressure regulator(might have been replaced with new engine. An old, cracked, leaking one will cause an engine fire). Is the Knightsport ECU installed and tuned? If not, go ahead an do that.

Other than that, the car looks really nice man! :)

Looks very nice. Get ready to lose money on maintenance... It's never perfect, and if it is, it's only momentary.

tt2323 06-25-04 02:56 AM

Turbo timers are useful to some people, Although i don't have one i know i'm always running late, and can't wait a minute with the car idling
