My Ebay DP

I ready many articles about cheap dp's with both good and bad reviews so I decided to try it myself. These are the details and pictures to go with. I got the dp only off Ebay and paid about $90 with shipping. It looked nice, polished, and the welds look good enough so it was time to get started. I had some trouble getting the bolts off the old dp and sheared on off in the process! (Fixed that) and installed the O2 sensor - it fit perfect. I planned to use the new gaskets but one broke during the installation and the other (dp to mid section) didn't line up with the bolts on the mid section so I just used the original. The most difficult part of the whole installation was getting the new dp on the turbos (small space, gasket, and for screws all had to line up!) but it was a perfect fit!! The trouble I had was with the pre-cut holes on the new dp didn't line up quite and a little short. So, with a round file and a few hours of grinding I carved enough metal to allow the bolts on the mid section through. (This took a few tries before getting it right). Last, and minor prob, was the new dp was about 3/4" shorter. Fortunately, the exhaust system swings a little. I would say in all, it took me one FULL day to install. I have now only to drive on it but I can only imagine that the car and turbos will pick up a little quicker.

Cool, congrats and thanks for the info! I also bought a dp off ebay a year ago and I too had to open the bolt holes on the cat side of the dp a little to make it fit. I also bought the midpipe off ebay and I have had no problems whatsoever since then. Its a good buy and not a "cheap" way to go, its a good quality and just happens to cost a little less than others.

I would have probably gouged my eyes out with the same round file if I had to spend two hours trying to enlargen a hole on a D/P flange... :crzyeye:

What hapened to your Dremmel tool??? :)

Congrats on successfully getting that sucker installed! Enjoy the new power and sounds of your turbos going zzzzzzing!! :bigthumb:

i cant ever find just a dp on ebay. its always just the dp mp combo, and i cant have a mp where i live. thanks for the write-up. let us know how it performs, and sounds.

Just put on my MP from ebay and it fit perfect. But damn is my car louder now that I replaced the gutted cat, I may actually tune it for the midpipe and then put the gutted cat back, so the police don't think anything is up.

I don't understand why you didn't just use a drill to enlarge the holes...I just did the same thing and it took 5 minutes. 2 hours is hell

I bought the mid/down pipe combo and it works great. I noticed huge gains after installing. The price for the m/d pipe went down. I bought mine 8 months ago for about $230 shipped. You can't go wrong for that price!

Vette454 04-06-04 06:40 AM

Cool man , I got the same setup , struggle to fit but made it work! Man the stock pre-cat is an ugly mutha!!!! and heavy at that!

Not always true. I put on an M2 downpipe years ago and it was a perfect fit. Didn't have to change a thing, was the exact size and holes were right on.

Actually just had a thought, would a downpipe from the US even fit a jap spec car ?

somehow i dont think it will?!?

My Pettit DP fit perfect, ..very expensive,...but perfect fit!!

EternalRage 04-06-04 10:29 AM

so are the gains noticable?

RX7INSAC 04-06-04 02:49 PM

With my mid/down pipe combo, the gains were very noticable. I would have to say more so with the mid pipe but I would recommend the combo for under $200 on ebay. I raced my buddys 5.0 mustang before and after. Before we were right next to each other until 3rd gear I would pull. After install, I would start pulling in 2nd gear. I'm not sure why, but quessing that the better flow was making quicker spool up for when I get traction in 2nd.

RX7INSAC 04-06-04 02:53 PM

Also, I noticed my boost went up about 2lbs afrer install do to better flow.

I don't know if you guys remember. But there was a thread in this section called "too good to be true"(or something like that) well a online company was selling a DP/MP combo for $169. There were a few people that said they bought it and it was great. Well I decided to pick one up also. I recieved and it was gorgeous, great welds, great polish, 02 fit perfect. But when it was time to put it on, we found out the bends were to bent. We had to heat up the pipe and bend it back down a bit. So remember you get what you pay for. I'm not sure about gains yet cause the car is still down.

t-von 04-06-04 04:28 PM

I got an ebay downpipe too. I didn't have any fitment issues.

No it won't, look at the J-Spec DP, it's got a kink in the pipe so that the steering collum fits by the DP... remember guys the wheel, Brake Cyl, ABS are all swapped on US Cars... and the DP isn't in the way of the steering collum.... on ours, so US designers don't need to wrestle with that issue...
