The oil filler neck is starting to get that foamy oil/water look. I am hoping it is just all the water in the air this time of the year combined with the fact that I drive it rarely in the winter. I took it on a 120 mile run this weekend. At sixty miles, it was quite foamy, I cleaned the cap and drove home. Upon inspection at home, it had no milk, but several small beads of water in the cap. Looking in the AST and in the elbow cap, I see no signs of oil.

But just in case...

I've heard others talk about installing sealant, but I would prefer not to gum up the insides if the engine. Instead, I guess I will wait a little longer to be sure, and then send the car out for a rebuild.

I am leaning toward a factory reman, but some of the mild street ports sound interesting.


Any idea how long (miles) between the start of the cow imitation till it is time to get a new engine?

How many miles do you think you can get out of a mildly ported engine. If I can run another 60K on a ported engine, it would be worth it to me.

the white gunk seems to be semi common and is not necessarily an indication of an impending rebuild. I guess I don't know to what extent it is happening on your car, so use your own judgement.
maxcooper noticed that it went away after changing to synthetic oil. you might give that a try and see if it changes your situation.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. All cars will do this, especially if you only make short trips and don't drive the car at operating temp for longs periods of time.

There are many other more accurate signs that your coolant seals are going. Like white smoke out of the tailpipe, coolant consumption, hard starting, bubbles coming out of the filler neck when the engine is running.

The day after my last post on this subject, I decided to take it for another spin and see what the results were...

After 30 miles, I looked again and there were still signs of water, even more than before. So, I thought about it and decided to get a bottle of "Bar's Leaks" radiator stop leak.

This has to be installed when the car is cool, but before pouring in a bottle, I decided to try one more thing. I cleaned the cap then reinstalled it loose so that air could pass and then drove again. For the past two days there has been no sign of water instead, when I look into the cap I see a reddish (rusty?) dry look.

I see no other signs that I am leaking or burning water. So, I will wait it out a bit more.

In the mean time, I am curious if anyone has ever used "Bar's Leaks." I am still loath to install anything that can gum-up my cooling system, but reading the bottle, it seels to indicate that it can be used without concern.

Does anyone have any experience with this stuff?

I used Wynn Stop Leak and drove my car for about 6 months ! ..in the purple bottle.
