My car is making an insane knocking noise? help please!

there is a huge knocking noise that increases with speed coming out of the driver's side rear of the car. I have no idea what it is. Does anybody have any ideas?

Could be: A halfshaft CV joint. You picked up some debris that destroyed your ABS pickup. A wheel bearing. A bent Disk. Loose lug nuts. Bent Rim. Loose caliper. Diff - not likely.

wheel bearing ;)

legendr35 03-24-02 09:45 PM

could it be the power plant frame?

vosko 03-24-02 09:53 PM

if he broke the ppf car wouldn't really move......

Does it increase with rpms (as opposed to speed)? Have you been drag racing (or launching) recently? Do a search under my username for PPF.....sounds like the mofo may be cracked. Throw the car up on a lift and check it out.

If you need any more help, shoot me a PM :)

I don't think it's the ppf I have seen plenty of broken ones...they clunk when shifting etc..Jack up the rear of the car and look..Put it into gear (friend) and see what it is..Make sure you chock the front wheels and use 2 jackstands and don't go very fast..BE CAREFUL..or take it to a shop with a lift and have them tell you what it is...Probably a better idea..

hey guys... sorry it took so long for me to get back to you... i'm scared about taking my car to a shop... is there any easy way to figure out what it might be w/o major disassembly? some more info about the noise: it has been making it for about 6 months, but only on left hand turns and it was really really quiet, just a slight knock. Day before yesterday we jacked up the car on each side to take my wheels off and polish them, that night driving home it didn't make too much noise, but then yesterday it was making it really really loud which is what made me post. now it does it really loud on left turns, loud going straight, and doesn't make it going right. I'm not sure if that makes it easier to figure out what's going on. and it only increases w/ speed not engine rpm. again sorry it took so long to get back you guys

well...if you haven't figured out yet...it's the wheel
bearings...sounds like urs is the right side..same thing
happened to me but mine was the other way around...it
sounds like a whooing sound and only comes wen i hit
30+mph...gets pretty darn annoying...i did most of the
work with a little help from my friends dad...well the
replacement bearing cost me around $85 and my old
bearing was rusted in...but the guy that helped me turn
my rotors($12 each rotor) helped me take out my old
bearing...all in all...it should take around 2 hours to do
this job...PITA to do though
have fun

whenever I step on the brakes the sound stops. could the brakes somehow be stabilizing the bearing? or could the knocking be a problem with my brakes? and it's the driver's side that's making the noise if that matters

Just pull that wheels out and check the pads, rotors and callipers.

Personally I think the problem is a bearing.

Be happy it is not the engine or turbos.

lost_rotary 03-31-02 05:59 PM

try jacking the car up and try wiggling the tire...if it wiggles it could either be ur bearings or ur bushings...
you can always take out the bearings yourself and check it...but it would be a waste of time if it's not ur bearings...if you decide to take them out...put ur fingers in the middle and spin the bearing...if it feels like it catches on something and doesn't spin smoothly..then it's the bearings...if that's not the case and there's no problem with the bearings...then it could be the one of the bushings
