my car looks like i blew the engine in a nascar when i let off + others :(

hey guys, new member here. i've been reading around but i never registered.

anyway, i have a 94 base with around 60,000 miles. pretty much stock with an intake, dp, ngk wires, and 9's all around.

i have a few problems, maybe you guys can help me out. i have one main problem that worries me...

(1) if i get on it and ride it out until redline it boosts fine, maybe loosing a little boost on the secondary due to age, but it pulls fine. But as soon as i let off, if i look in the rear view there is just a HUGE cloud of dark smoke behind the car. and it's not coming from the exhaust, it looks like a nascar when it blows an engine, smoke coming from underneath the car. Could it be oil burning up? i know that my oil pan is starting to leak a little and my oil metering pump is leaking i think... but i just dont have any idea what is causing all that smoke?!! it's a LOT OF SMOKE and it seems like it would have to be losing a lot of oil or anything to make that much smoke... but when i drive normal it doesnt happen at all, only when i run throught the gears and then let off.

(2) also, my idle has been pretty high lately, around 1500... the AWS seems to work fine but the idle never really settles down past 1500. could that be the TPS? i get good vaccum at idle, around -16 to -19.

i tried searching, but all i really got was stuff about smoke at startup, and my car does smoke at start up, but only for a minute or so and it doesnt smell sweet or anything so i havent been worried about that.

any help you guys could give me i would really appreciate it, i'm really worried about that big smoke cloud following my car around!

1)
check your oil level on the dip stick, my previous car (not a rx7)did this only when you put your foot down then let off.... a cloud of greyish smoke came out the back it was because the guy at the garage had over filled the car with oil! (tw*t!) i dont know if this is related but worth a look.

2)
definatly check all the vaccum lines could be one of those.

let me know what happens

You could have a leak somewhere. Mine leaks on the turbo side and smokes when I sit in traffic after hard runs but your smoke is black so I don't know.

i know it's not a vaccum line.

i'll check the oil level in a little while when i get back to the car, i'll let you know.

i'm thinking that maybe my oil metering pump is spitting a little oil (i know it leaks) and then that is hitting the turbos and all the other hot metals down there and burning up... it's possible, but i dont know why it would only do it on hard runs. i dont see smoke any other time.

if any body has any idea how to check this out i would appreciate it.

your turbos could be leaking oil, which would explain why it happens upon deceleration to. Might want to think about new turbos

I would put money on your turbos leaking oil. Been there, done that. Time for a turbo rebuild kit. Of course, if you dont mind the smoke screen, than who cares. Drive them till they dont boost anymore, than buy a single..

pianoprodigy 02-23-04 05:10 PM

I didn't think that oil burned black? I had an issue with lots of black smoke upon decelleration from high RPMs. It had to do with my ECU (microctech). It was set on the "flames on" setting. I've read somewhere on this board that black smoke is due to unburned fuel...

DCrosby 02-23-04 05:24 PM

Yes an engine running way to rich without cats will do that, the question is why would it run so rich !? Check your sensors... or borrow an Apexi, AEM, Haltech with stock harness adaptor and check if you lean it out if it goes away !? Also you'd be able to check which sensor might be the culprit... A fuel problem isn't easy to diagnose over a forum, then again neither is a turbo problem... but you've definitely have one or the other, depending on the color of the smoke...

hey guys thanks for the replies.

after reading the last 3-4 replies i think i may have narrowed it down a bit... please let me know if you think it's a possibility.

like pianoprodigy i have a lot of smoke upon decelleration from high RPMs, it looks black/dark to me and it definitely doesnt look like it's coming out of the exhaust. it's from the entire rear bumper so it must be smoke from the engine bay... something is burning. today when i started the car up for the first time i popped the hood and noticed some smoke from around the DP/Turbo area. i looked down and saw that it looked like there was some kind of liquid on the DP that was burning off from the heat. could that have been oil left on there from my drive last night? if so, then oil must be hitting my DP and burning causing all that smoke. the only thing i dont know now is where its coming from.... i guess it could be the OMP but i'm not too sure if that would get all the way back there. it seems like its coming from somewhere else.

i also get a squeaking noise from around the FPR under the UIM sometimes when the car is sitting at idle... along with that i have a high idle at around 2500 rpm, and if i tap the gas it will go down to about 1500rpm but it looks like it wants to climb back up.

i'm thinking that MAYBE i need to replace the FPR? that could be causing the high idle if it is dead/dying and also causing the car to run really rich... am i correct in thinking this? Also i'm going to check the air bleed screw and the TPS.

check your vacuum line at the fuel pressure regulator and make sure its connected. If it is connected then pull it off and see if any fuel leaks out of it (if fuel leaks out then its bad). The oil that is leaking on to your downpipe sounds like a loose fitting on the Y pipe.

If you still have the stock coupler on there then try inspecting the black coupler for tears and rips. If no rips or tears are there then make sure the clamps are tight. Clean the area off with brake clean (when the motor is cold) to remove the oily build up and take for a test drive and see what happens.

thanks, i'll try and check that out.

i recently checked the FPR vaccum hose and found that it was completely ripped in half! i replaced it, but it never really helped anything, so i'm thinking that the FPR itself is dead. I will check the vaccum line though.

i'll check out the y-pipe too and the couplers and let you guys know. probably wont get around to it until tomorrow though.
