Is my air filter too small?

Ok so i am just not sure if my little air filter is going to flow enough air. It is going between my radiator and intercooler. I am also running non seq at 13psi if that makes any difference. I have circles of the size inlet pipes from the turbos.

that is pretty small... look at the stock one, made for 255hp and 10psi, but its bigger than that.
What material is that filter? It better not be something that gets brittle and breaks up over time because its such a small intake that its gonna see increased air velocity. (not to mention your 13 psi sucking at it)

You got pics of it installed? Whats the necessity of this custom intake? Mods?

Crap the pictures dont work now i will try to post some up tonight about how it mocks up with the intercooler and rad. The filter is just like a standard filter, cotton.

Im just trying to think about it logically, i feel like you only need a filter as big as a turbo inlet which it will be plenty bigger. The thing is i always see these guys running huge cone filters on single turbo setups and wonder why such a big filter?

Maybe Howard Coleman can chime in on this one?

The filter is 6x3.5in since my pics got screwed up

Without knowing for sure, it's hard to tell if you have a restrictive intake.

Check this article out -

They use a VERY sensitive vacuum gauge to measure intake restriction. That's the only way to know for sure.

I'd have to see your pics, though :).

So what are the inches of water that you get from hooking a home made manometer to the intake elbow of a stock Rx7? Probably sucked the water up the 40" tube(-10 kPa) right into the engine 8^).

Why is your IC core so massive for a twin turbo car?

DaleClark 03-09-10 09:06 PM

That's one wild setup!

Considering you're making a custom airbox, it might be worth tracking down a manometer like in the article above and see about optimizing the setup. That filter does look pretty small - think about the size of the stock air filter, that's probably the size you need to start with for a panel type filter.

Yeah i kinda went wild with the tig welder. I just have no room for a bigger filter. Back to the drawing board i supose. maybe i can just run a big cone filter and make the same air box over it? Still i dont know if it will fit in.

Do you have dual oil coolers? If not you may consider getting nonpopup headlights and using the pass. side cooler opening for an intake location. You have the fab skillz to pull it off.
BUT, the recommendation is to HAVE dual oil coolers.

Do a search and you'll find an example

Once you go single, that setup you have will be inadequate. Alot of single turbo guys have the filter on the compressor sucking up heated engine bay air. But, they know that overall their single setup is more heat effiecient than the twinz setup so it still works in their favor.

For now, you may be OK, what currently leads to detonation is lack of fuel, not air.

I do have dual oil coolers, yeah i thought of doing that. I dont know i was thinking maybe a air box where my abs used to be. The problem with that is where to get the freash air from... i dont exactly want a scoop on the side of my hood. Plus i already am making my stock hood into a v mount config, but no fiberglass, just welding should be pretty sick.
