moving turbos

a friend of mine was telling me that with his seven he repositioned the turbos away from the engine. he said that that helps save the seals. im not sure if this has been adressed before, i ran a search but didnt find anything. the same guy said that when u put a little oil in when u fill gas it also helps keep the rotors lubricated. any ideas?

Your friend is an idiot....repositioning the turbos? I think not.

The oil thing is called "pre-mixing". It is not necessary, especially for street driving.

crxturboh22 04-03-07 12:08 PM

yeah haven't heard about that.. but when you said he relocated the turbos i'm thinking he's not running the stock twins right.. single right? well most of the single turbo dont stay as close as the twins would... but saving the seals i dunno about that.. it might last a little longer because there's not as much heat like it had before..... sht i dunno.. might helf i guess!!.

dean23 04-03-07 12:11 PM

maybe you friend figured the further from the engine, the less heat to damage the seals. but even then it wouldnt make any difference.

shotta 04-03-07 12:19 PM

yea he said that moving the turbos=less heat. and he was using twins and got a custom manifold for it (according to him) it helped alot

we'd all love to see pictures

Gouki7 04-03-07 12:34 PM

it makes sense my friend told me the same thing, but it's not gonna make a difference on the "regular" time for a rebuild but say if you're running the car hard constantly it'll help alittle bit and hey if anything helps from having to do an "early" rebuild and gives you more power than why not? *edit this of course being a single turbo setup vs. twins.

NCMontegott 04-03-07 12:56 PM

I would like to see that.
one question though... if you move the turbos away form the engine then how in the hell are you going to remove and replace them if and when they blow out!

Why is it the guy's with all the great ideas never are the actual ones posting on this forum......it's always second hand.

Monkman33 04-03-07 03:19 PM

No Pics = He is just pipe dreaming and thinks it is a good idea. hoping you will figure out a way to do it. Then he'll copy you and say "Hey! I did mine just like that! Works great ... huh?!"

CantGoStraight 04-03-07 03:30 PM

I'm planning on moving mine. I have a set of Pettit High flows I've been planning on moving into the engine compartment once I get off my butt and move the old tired ones out.

GoodfellaFD3S 04-03-07 04:36 PM

You can move the stock twins into the midpipe, this helps cool the engine bay down tremendously

shotta 04-03-07 04:38 PM

hey hey dont beat on the messenger, i just posted it wondering what u guys thought. but hey every little thing counts right.

Larz 04-03-07 04:53 PM

One of my friends had heard the same thing. I told him to understand the basics of turbocharging then get back to me.

dontlift 04-03-07 05:48 PM

it helped alot
What did it help? Not his performance...

Lower exhaust temperature = lower exhaust pressure = lower boost

Well, there is a practice called 'cost/benefit analysis,' something your friend fails miserably at......

Ledfoot 04-03-07 07:50 PM

...where the hell you gonna move them to? the wheel well? ..it will rub when you make left turns...lol

...remember if you premix, disconnect the OMP...or octane rating will drop...

SiKoPaThX 04-04-07 02:08 PM

Maybe we should move our turbos to somewhere in the exhaust tunnel and make new custom manifolds and exhausts :rlaugh:

RAM AIR YO!!!!

An FD's gas tank is 3280 ounces. People who premix with a functioning OMP typically add 10 to 20 ounces per tank. You're not going to see an appreciably drop in octane in this case........

...just a caution...gone are the days when my daily driver could still run safely on premium...

...i read somewhere that premixing alone with 2 stroke oil will drop octane rating by 2 points...also gas will degrade in as little as 3 weeks...

Ledfoot 04-04-07 10:49 PM

...had it bookmarked
