Mounting PFC commander (please read)

Im after the thread or information on the way one of the members on here mounted their PFC commander.
The way it was mounted was on a piece of plexiglass (plastic) and then on a "bit" that plugged into the cigrette lighter. It looked great and cost him about $2. Better than spending about $100 on a R-Magic holder (although they look good too)

Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm after what wheels are on that Montego Blue in your avatar... anymore pics of thaT? lol

As for the mount, never saw it -- sounds easy enough though... a gutted cig lighter with inline resistors to a nice bright LED would do the trick with less than 10$ invested in the project... the plexi you'd just have to shape it with sand paper, a little tedious but has the potential to come out nicely.

They are Mazdaspeed MS-01s. Can't post any other pics cos my home PC is bust!
I'll post more at a later date for you.

this something else members are using. This allows you to see it eye level and allow you to use a radar detector by not blocking the plug.I got it (universal) like others from Radioshack.

IIRC it was just made by melting the plastic from a 12v cig light plug onto a flat piece of plastic at a good viewable angle, and using Velcro to secure it to the plate.

Not too bad of a idea, and it gets rid of the superfluous cigarette lighter :D

You can go get a plastic welding gun or just use a solder gun on some thermo plastic, and it shouldn’t be too hard.

Stop Stop Stop! I'll have to go and see if I can get a pic of mine. This cost me all of $1.50 or so. Take a piece of clear Plexiglass (free from the scrap bin at Lowes) and cut it to match the back of your commander. Place Velcro on one side and then stick it to the commander. Then take a 1/2" PVC plug and drill 4 or five small holes in the top of it. Drill four corresponding holes in the Plexoglass (after finding a suitable height that you want it of course) The holes help the two smooth serfaces bond by allowing the JB Weld mentioned in the next step to seep into the plug and the plexiglass. Then just take the JB Weld mentioned above and push it into the holes and stick them together.

The threads from the plug make it so that it fits snugly into the cigarette lighter. In fact mine is so snug that you actually pull the lighter out of the dash if you try to pull it straight out. The Velcro allows you to remove the commander if you don't want it mounted (Make sure you put the soft side of the velcro on the back of the commander for that pleasant feel.). It sits so far in the lighter that you can hardly see the plug at all from the side. It also keeps you from having to worry about shorting out your lighter as it is just a plastic plug you are sticking in there. You also retain the use of your lighter for Ipods, radar detectors or any other electronics you might use. I'll try to get those pics.

I believe I've seen that on sicminded's FD. He has the PFC mounted right infront of the emergency lights and right at the bottom right of the cluster. Looked great IMO and thats what i want to do too when i get my pfc.

Hey just think you can paint the base that is exsposed and still be out of this thing for less than $6. Can't beat that and you haven't done anything that can't be undone. Damn I should have pantented this!

I did mine similarly. I used the 1/2 inch pvc connector... on the end I used a pvc cap that fits over the 1/2 inch connector. I connected the two. Then I drilled a hole through the cap and bolted the pexiglass sheet on that way. No jb weld or whatever, its just bolted on. Use velcro on the pexi.

I did similar with mine, locates it in a lovely spot..and is removeable without leaving a mark

I used a "no smoking" ciagrette socket bung (Ruberrised stopper with ribs along it, and no smoking on the end) available from auto parts shops.
I then used a mobile phone holder that normally clips into the air vents..I unscrewed all the bracketry off the back and epoxy glued it to the no smoking bung (Slightly off centre so the pfc would end up in the exact position i wanted)

The mobile phone holder looks 100% stock, it is the type with the two rounded wings (one either side) with one able to be moved. It grips the sides of the pfc like a vice..and the pfc display sits on top of the wings (Meaning it can not slip down)

Very solid...doesnt shake etc (tested on Australia's shitty roads..it still doesnt shake)
No velcro on my pfc commander for me..and I can still pull the controller out and hand to the passenger in case of tuning requirements etc..

here is mine, modified gotham commander mount..

fdeeznutz 09-30-05 07:50 PM

Or you could spend .20 on some velcro and stick it to the dash. Mine has been like this for 3 years and it works great. All the info on the commander is just a glace away. It blocks the stock temp gauge slightly, but who cares.

Here are a couple more pics.

Wow, that is so perfect, exactly what I want for my car!!! Thank you for posting the pics. Any idea on weight for those sexy lil' devils?

~Kris

steve burnett 10-01-05 10:40 AM

Thanks for the kind words.

No Idea at all of the weight but being Mazdaspeed wheels made by Rays/Volk I doubt they weigh much.

JaNusSolSumnus 10-01-05 10:44 AM

Yea, I'm definately going to have to seek some out, your Montego Blue looks beautiful, I'm even taking a liking to the color matched R1 lip.
