Hey guys,

I am consulting and leading the development of MotoIQ.com's project FD RX-7 "Restomod".

I will be posting all of the articles here and will be here to answer any questions you might have.

I'm in the middle of my own restomod build, I won't be posting anything until the shop is much closer to completion though.

Nice car and an excellent starting point but unfortunately I'm not 15 years old, so you've lost me. There are multiple threads from senior forum members with decades of rotary racing experience on the subject of how to properly build / set-up a reliable rotary.

Also. How does one quantify 'cool'? And. Imo 'oem+' is just the current trendy buzzword of the moment. Everyone trying to milk the 'jdm greatness' cow however they can right now. It's just sad.

I’ll watch and follow with cautious optimism. But you don’t need to have a racing background to do what you’re proposing (see signature). And it made me think of this….

No need to hate on it. Not sure why this is sad.

He already won in my book. 1) stated twin turbos are identically sized, and 2) not saying the engine is unreliable like all the other articles.

Looks like a solid car to start with. Have you actually started the process on the car or are you just at the beginning?

That HKS air intake is a nice kit and VERY pricey new, like $500. Crazy that it has that and then the super cheap-o Ebay intercooler with no duct.

For power, you can't beat this recipe on an OEM+ type setup -

350 rear wheel horsepower with emissions, AC, easy to drive. That truly is an OEM+ level of power. That with well-chosen wheels and tires and good coilovers would make an amazing car.

Welcome to the forum, Billy! Enjoyed seeing your car on Rob Dahm's channel on YouTube and looking forward to seeing how far the build goes.

Rob has a great handle on what works and what doesn't in an FD from experience.

There's been more "OEM+" builds than I can shake a stick at, but the presentation is very nice. I'll stick around and see if I can learn anything from a professional; should be interesting to see how this goes. Best of luck to you gents (and gentleladies)!

It is a pretty solid starting platform. There have already been a few things that have been done that will be covered in future articles. I'm not a fan Hot-Air-Intakes like the HKS and many aftermarket setups. So these will be up for sale in the near future. I plan to go well beyond that build.

Thanks! Very cool. Rob's a great guy and i'm looking forward to doing more work with him and consulting on his builds as well. That's a great link. I'll be posting a lot of dyno results along the build path as well to be another resource for the community.

Yes it is. And i'll be doing more stuff with Rob on this car as well as helping him with his other projects.

As someone who's been stalking these forums since WAY before I had a license your definitely in the right place for figuring out how to build these things. Having Rob will definitely be an invaluable resource as well.

This is definitely a great thing for me to see, I'm getting brutally bogged down in my own little resto-mod, I swear every little thing keeps breaking on me. I keep reading old and on-going builds over and over trying to bring back my motivation but It's getting dark.

I actually had a friend who met you at one point send me this article in the morning, It'll be interesting to see someone with a background like yours to see how you build up this wonderfully unique machine.

Choosing wheels and tires is such an important decision that greatly affects the potential of a car. We improve the performance and visual presence of our FD Mazda RX-7 with beautiful T-D6 wheels from Titan 7 and try out Continental’s new 200-treadwear tire, the Extremecontact Force.

FWIW from the first installment, yes, the original style PFC commander was close to useless unless you were parked in a dark tunnel. The newer OLED version is way way gooder…and not terribly expensive IMO. And that would avoid the need for an expensive stand-alone change unless you’ve got a new sponsor.

...or have the screen replaced on the old commander. The new ones look and work great for a few years then the screen dies. The old commanders are super easy to swap in off-the-shelf screens. Most that I have seen are white on blue background, very easy to read in all lighting conditions.

PFCs can work great, but the user interface and integration of modern ECUs and race dashes make life much nicer. Stay tuned for when we get to that section (and no, none of the engine control stuff was sponsored).
