Most Desirable Color
Guys I am going to sell my FD and repaint it before I do.
What is your vote on easiest color to sell/most desirable? My preference was flat black or a pearl white. Or would the factory black or white be best for resale? It is a LS1 and already repainted so sticking to original paint code, I do not think matters. What color would you think would draw the most attention and make a buyer excited? Thanks |
If you don't want to change the color, you can get clear mixed with matting agent and convert your current paint into a "flat" paint.

Personally, I think a car sells because of its general cleanliness, care, and modifications. Any of the OEM colors are a good choice. I don't think it gets too "love it/hate it" until you start getting into more unique colors like orange.
I will add, of the OEM colors, white and CYM are the most rare, and often the most sought after. |

You're in a tough spot. Honestly, I think it might be best to let the buyer pick what color to paint and take that money off the price. Unless you have a stupid good deal on paint that is. If you want your car to stand out, I'd pick non-oem colors that are tasteful. I spent a lot of time trying to pick out a color for my 2nd FD. In the end, I picked the 99 spec Mazda pearl white :(. Looks great in person but not so great in pics with non-flattering lighting so I'd keep that in mind. I think think any white would be pretty appealing to buyers since it seems to be the "in" color right now. A very metallic black would be nice as well. I looked at Audi/BMW/Mercedes. The Mercedes designo colors look very nice and the BMW blue/black colors look great as well. GM Cyber metallic gray looks great on FDs as well. I think any of the colors I mentioned are appealing to most people. I must say though, I was shocked at how good matte gray looked in person. I've seen it in pictures and it looked good but I thought I'd hate it in person but it was pretty damn nice.

Having owned a few over the years, I like the factory PZ Brilliant Black the best.
Runner up would be the Vintage Red. Then white. Then Silverstone. The thing I hate the MOST about the FD, is that people are so deeply devoted to abbreviating EVERYTHING on the car, especially colors. Whenever I see people write 'CYM' or 'MB' or 'SSM' it makes me cringe and want to hurl my laptop out the window. Seriously. Another four seconds of typing to write out the full paint color code name is not going to hurt anyone. Recently I told a member that his car looked like it was silver stone metallic from factory. He thanked me because after searching the forums, he only got jargon like MB, SSM, CYM, VR coming up for paint colors, and he did not know how to decipher the 'inside-information' as he was new to the forums. Pet peeve over. |
Silver and White are easiest to sale........as long as they are the original colors. A full paint change pushes a lot of buyers away with these cares. Take my "opinion" with a grain of salt but Ive sold a couple fds over the years.

If I remember right I read a study a few years ago that said white cars have the highest resale value and that silver was the most common color of car in America. Don't remember why of if that study is now out of date. Just so you know when I personally am looking at a car, when it is repainted my first questions is "why"? What happened to the car they are trying to hide. In every case I've had the car had been hit.

BB or CW, IMO I won't buy any car that is not respray in factory color.

I can't imagine you'll make back the value of a quality paint job in the sale price. Why bother? Offer it for less, and/or let the buyer choose, especially since color is such a person opinion/choice.

Red- one of the most popular colors white-gets too dirty black-gets dirty, hides sexy body lines / details yellow-hard sell montego blue-another hard sell silver-maybe the best option if you are intent on painting. Just my opinion. |
I specifically looked for a black rx7. My favorite color of rx7's. The owner had the car re-sprayed but not a stock black color.
personally, I like white and black sports cars. I would love a white porsche GT2 or a black GT2. |

I'm biased towards blue cars. My first two were Montego. I repainted one of them to the 99 factory color Innocent Blue mica. It was usually the only blue car at the races and meets. I have a red car now that I am repainting to a house of Kolors blue. As far as resale is concerned, I agree with the previous post that said it will be dependent upon the over all condition if the car and not necessarily the color.
I'd rank the factory colors as follows. 1. Innocent Blue mica 2. Brilliant black 3. Completion Yellow mica 4. Silver stone metallic 5. Montego blue 6. Chaste white 7. Vintage red 8. Sprit R grey metallic? Something like that but as we all know color is totally subjective. Just avoid pink. :) |
CW, BB, SSM, and MB are my favorites.
CYM is yellow... VR fades to orange. |

I respectfully disagree, when I look for a car, color is a major deciding factor as is price etc. I personally do not prefer montego blue or red RX-7s. I don't like either of those factory colors, I had them! To me black or white are the only good looking colors, CYM is cool but I wouldn't drive a yellow car.

I like my sports cars to have a color to them, so for me white, black, and shades in between (like silver, grey, charcoal...) don't make it for me. I also like going with factory colors. So, for RX7's, red is the winner for me. Just an example that we all have our opinions. And I'm thinking that the 'rarest' colors are probably the least popular, but they do have a collector appeal for those wanting a virgin car.
What color was it before? Unless it's completely apart sticking to the 'was' color is simplest. Paint it what you like, or let the new buyer select a color! |
Whatever your color preference is, and all subjectivity aside, I do think it's important to respray a car the same color it originally came in. I feel that color changes ultimately detract from the car, unless it was done so thoroughly you can't even tell. But this is no small feat to accomplish properly.
Furthermore, I think a 2-stage respray in general is a worthwhile investment... given the fact that Mazda used Single Stage paint for the solid colors (BB, VR, CW). Plus, the stock paint quality and durability overall isn't exactly known to be stellar. |

Awesome so there are 2 99 spec white colors that mazda put on the RX-7s in Japan?
Do you have pics of both? and the spirit R was the pearl white, same as a 2001 millenia http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...llenia_003.JPG |
I honestly love Innocent Blue Mica, I've painted my car in that color twice. Everyone who ever sees the car seems to love it so I think it'd be a good choice for resale.
