More led taillights

I don't have that much traffic in my other post so decided to put it here. I have been working on some new led tails for some time now and finally completed my prototype.

looks good to me. You should try and get a video of it driving in normal traffic during the day and at night.

Unfortunately my car does not move.

You running super flux LEDs?

Should have asked in my last post but red or red/orange? I haven't been able to find any red/orange lately :(

Red-orange. They have a higher lumen rating than red. I bought mine from a member on another forum.

You can still purchase the red-orange through:
Code:

http://www.futureelectronics.com/
I bought some from them not too long ago.
Shipping was pretty fast and they are very bright.

@turboIIrotary
Have you looked into makrolon lumen xt for the diffuser?
I've heard some good things about the product but unless you can get some samples from a supplier its a little risky to buy a sheet 48"x96" (~$200+).
They do offer it in various thicknesses though.

Are you running the same leds on the left side in that picture?
I'm guessing the high intensity is making the diffused tail look washed out?
Also, which superflux batch did you get?

I was able to diffuse the LEDs with the stock diffuser so they look like solid lines close up also. Both tails have the same LEDs left side is on a pwm and right is dimmed with a resistor to take a picture. If I remember correctly they are G bin.

Those look really nice. Very updated feel.

I like those, they remind me of the taillights in my 14 Fusion. But I find myself liking the LED round ones better.

Ya they've been on back order, late December date on having them in stock I believe

I've been looking through different Diffuser material for some red custom plexiglass taillight project I'm doing similar to this. I've been trying to avoid that break in the line for the blinker separator. This is something unique I've come across but any home Depot light cover will work as well. I don't believe my source sells this online but I'll look into it if any is interested.

That's what I used first but with only hand tools I could not cut out the acrylic perfect enough to fit in the housing. It also gives a non OEM look so I pretty much scrapped the idea right away. It did diffuse the leds enough to not see the hotspots though.

David Hayes 12-02-14 11:23 AM

^ That looks really nice. I've got an angle on a new material that will solve the individualized LED look. It's an OEM product used on a lot of the newer cars for the diffused look. Will post up once I receive it and check it out.

Getting a good template made is the hard part. Once you have that it's just a little jigsaw work and heating it up to flex and sanding to a good fit.

I need to order more LEDs to make an official set. There are some things I do not like such as the top right corner and I bent the perf board too much on the right side so it looks uneven. Although that is only noticable in pictures but it still bothers me.

^ that's the best looking tail I've seen. Of course I imagine it with out the line break. Looking forward to seeing you figure it out. I like the continuous laser more than dots.

FFWD_FD 12-02-14 03:39 PM

TurboII - that's really good progress there and it looks way better than some of the other LED rear lights that's been pop'n up. Keep at it and keep us posted.

ptrhahn 12-02-14 04:36 PM

I wish somebody would just offer the theorie-style diffused circles with suitable brightness. This design, no offense, looks like a paper clip.

David Hayes made a good write up on how to make them. Fairly easy to do.

I softened the curve a little more to flow with the body and added more leds across the split. I just need to add a diffuser between the lenses. Side lit acrylic should work out.

Added some acrylic real quick I don't have my torch to polish the edge and I didnt make them long enough so it doesn't diffuse the led like it is suppose to. I think I am done with the prototype now.

I was over thinking this one. Simply push the lenses together and tada a uniform line. I see an empty spot where an couple of leds can be added in the bottom line between the lenses but overall I am pretty happy. This is probably the best it can get with two lenses.
