Missing Pills

I did my silicon hoses, now I have low boost on my primary and boost hits my setpoint as soon as the secondary comes on. The hoses to the turbo actuators did not have pills in them. I checked twice. My car was built in August of 92 so it should have pills. Before the hose job, it would get to 12.8 psi quickly (2500 RPM), now it will only get to about 7-8 psi before the secondary comes on. The charge control valve is pulled into the actuator when the engine is running, so I believe the only thing left is that the wastegate is open slightly, ie. rod improper length, or I am missing something with the pills. How far are they normally inside the stock hose? If it was pushed right to the end I may have missed it falling on the floor when I pulled the old hoses off.

Are you using a boost controller??
My pills were ~2 inches in and stuck pretty good. I got them out by sticking a long screwdriver throught hose.

mine were stuck good too but no pills could create the symptoms it sounds like you're describing.

I have a Power FC, which controlled boost perfectly before the hose swap. From what I understand, my symptoms are very similar to if I did the hose swap and forgot to put the pills in the new hoses. My old hoses are still on the floor of my garage and do not have pills in them. At one time, the hose at the wastegate solenoid was not connected. The car would run exactly at my primary boost setpoint until the secondary turbo came online, then boost would shoot up till I hit the fuel cut. That was a few weeks ago, and I fixed that problem.

Your right, it really does sound like your missing the pills. Take a look at this pic:

and make sure your looking for the pills in the right hoses. Cut them open and look inside to make sure they are not there. If after doing that if your still sure you don't have the pills pull off those 2 lines and look at the nipples they plug into. If you have the newer style turbos that have the restricors built in then those nipples won't have a large opening, they will have very small holes (like the size of a needle).

I will check the size of the nipple openings when I get home. Should I be looking at the ones on the actuator? Or the other end? I really hope I need the pills and just dropped them somewhere, otherwise I'm back to square one here.

I'm pretty sure they would be on the turbo side nipples, but check both to be sure.

Just for reference my pills were not in mine either when I did my swap to 99 spec spinners. I did add them to the line when reinstalling though.I also have a 93.

Just checked, there is no restriction in either then actuator or y-pipe end. Still no pills in the hoses I left on the floor. I will try to adjust the boost with my PFC and install my downpipe and high flow Cat before I look to buy any carb jets.

Dr. Strange (?), if you didn't have any pills, did you have the restricted nipples? Man, could that question be taken out of context.:p: Seriously, how was your boost controlled?

Of course, increasing the duty cycle on my PFC doesn't work. I guess I'll get some carb jets.

OK, to finish this thread. I went to a local shop and got the pills out of a set of turbos they had sitting there. I believe I may have reversed them, as I understand they are two different sizes. Anyway, on my first third gear run, acceleration seemed sluggish until the secondary came on, then I immediately hit the fuel cut. After adjusting the duty cycle on the secondary down to 30 and the primary up to 80, everything seems back to normal. I will try to get this a little more precise after adding the downpipe and high flow cat.

Actually if your car has EVER had turbo's replaced by Mazda, there is a chance you have the newer housings. The newer turbo housings have the pills (restrictors) built in to the housing, with no need for the use of pills.

I had checked that earlier, and there was no restriction in the actuator nipples.
