mis-aligned turbos....
ok well im in a bit of a pickle (due to my rushing through things ). i took apart my turbos to port the wastegate, and do a few other little things to them. problem is i forgot to mark the ratating assembaly and center sections before taking them apart.... now as im putting them back together i realized that i forgot that step arrrgg!! now what? does anyone have any tips besides taking them in and out of the car a bunch of times to adjust the rotation?? i have a feeling the old guess and check method will take FOREVER@!!! BNR or other turbo rebuilders must have some method, or maybe someone on the furum can share anything they know. thanks -heath

Use the preformed oil and coolant pipes to allign them.

i think he means he took the turbos apart. not that he cant line it back up to the rotor housings.
want a word of advise? to bad your gonna get it :). Fix it right. if not your gonna pay the price down the road. while you have the turbos out re-adjust them the RIGHT way. if you try and half ass it then get the turbos back on and do alllllllllllllllllllllllllll the other work to get the car back on the road, then find out you still didnt do it right. guess what.. you back at square one. So pull them turbos back apart and adjust them to spec. Save yourself more time and possibly MUCH more money. |
Did you take the Compressor Housing (snail) off the Bearing Housing? Or did you take the CH/BH (as a unit) off the Turbine manifold??
|
areX: i only unbolted the hot side of the housings from the turbos. the rotating assembaly (is that called the cartridge) and the aluminum cold sides (with the snap rings) are in the proper rotation. my only problem is getting the hot sides lined back up...

Save yourself more time and possibly MUCH more money. yeah i dont half ass stuff.... what im wondering is HOW to align them to spec? the only way i can think of doing it is guess as to the orientation, reassemble them, install them... see if the DP alligns properly, see if the intake pipes allign properly.... then pull them back out, adjust, repeat |
Place the Turbos back on (do not use bolts/retainers) and place the Y-Pipe on to get them aligned. Then,..do as MichaelFregoe suggested and use the oil/water lines to get proper Bearing Housing alignment.
I'll try to post a few pics of a Turbo assembly a little later so you can compare. |
How did you get it apart? ...impact gun maybe (I want to heat coat mine).
Have the parts heat coated and then pay to have it assembled and aligned. |

You should take advantage of the situation and have them 2k ceramic heat coated! :bigthumb: |

Here's a couple of photos. I hope it helps. I included one that illustrates all the internal components. If you need additional photos of the Turbo Assembly let me know and I'll take photos of the set I have in my garage.

thanks areXseven. it looks like i can use the WG actuator as a reference for the primary.... and the oil lines should line up the secondary rotating housing.... pheww hopefully it will go back together correctly. im glad i didnta take those snap rings off hehe |

I know this might sound kind of weird.. But when I help one of my friend put his turbo back on after disassemble.. I line the turbo by hitting it with the hammer (after mounting it to the engine).. it spun the turbo a little to line back up.. By looking at your oil line, you just need to tap it a little to line it up.. Just a suggestion by my previous experience.. but unlike your turbo position, I need to spin counter clockwise.. You need to spin clockwise..
