midpipe question and wg question
 

i hear that if you put on a midpipe you start getting funky smells in you car. if so is this only at warmup or all the time. For the wastegate say if im running sequential still and making 320-340rwhp at 12-13psi would i have to port the wastegate or if i use a Apexi PFC could it handle the job and how hard is it to port the wastegate

In the car? You shouldn't smell it in the car but if the windows are down and the wind is blowing then yes.

Even stock rx-7s or ones with high flow cats smell like tons of gas so imagine a straight pipe and hopefully you are running rich to be safe so it should smell pretty bad

I think every car is different on how it boosts. Depends on a lot of things so you would have to see if the pfc controls it well for your car. The wg isn't hard to port but taking the turbos off of the car will be.

That's not true at all (if the cat is actually working).

I have a hi-flow without the airpump hooked up. It burns some, but not nearly enough to make the exhaust not smell. I'm not sure what the difference would be if the airpump was hooked up. My stock cat with the airpump hooked up didnt smell as bad at all. It was clogged.

I have DP, MP, anc CB with stock twin at 13 psi stable no creep. Unported but it does spike to15 psi at 4500rpm. Smell is not bad when driving but the garage stinks.

for me, the major downside to the MP are the fumes. with the window down , sitting at the light, it is pretty strong. and in the garage, forget about it. run it for more than a few seconds, and it's like being in a gas chamber -

The Power FC (or any boost controller) won't help you combat boost creep. You'll need either some restriction in the exhaust, or a ported wastegate. Porting the wg involves removing the turbos; it's a pita to have done if you're removing the turbos just to port the wg. I had mine ported when I bought a reman motor back in the day.

If you're going to try a midpipe, keep a close eye on your boost as you rev through the gears. Even with a ported wg, I crept to 13 psi on a hot day, 15 psi on a cold day. Each 7 is different; just be careful :).

When i put on my m2 catback i saw 14 psi on a cold night. so.. make sure you gotta boost controller and something for the turbo precontrol...(or whatever its called).

also i noticed that some people have creep and others don't. do you guyys think that since i saw 14psi with just a catback i will have bad creep??

Btw im not sure if the 14 psi i saw was creep or spike or what ..i just know i saw it and then brought the car in and now im waiting on my ecu to come in:D

Yeah, I side with Goodfella, you always have to watch your boost and just be careful. Even I talked to Cameron at Pettit, and he was warning me that many times, no matter how much you port, you will still have boost creep issues with a wide open exhaust.

I have mp, dp, and cb. It smells pretty bad most the time when stopped or in the garage but it doesn't seem as bad as what others peoples are. I think it is all based on each different engine. Plus mine has low compression, so I don't know just an idea.

With the stock turbos, you will spike with a full open exhaust setup. The stock wastegate cannot handle that much boost relief. Get a pop-off valve. A boost controller will limit it, but a spike is an out of control thing that can't be prevented by electronics. The boost simply creeps over the preset limit after the wastegate flow threshold has been exceeded. If you want to keep the turbos, I'd just save your money and wait until you can afford an upgrade like the BNR's or something. Ported wastegates come in the package. I'd recommend a pop-off valve and/or the high-flow cat option. Those will provide a physical barrier to boost creep where electronics can not. That doesn't mean don't skip the boost controller. Either get a remap or go with an EMS that the car will run nicely with the mods going into it.

With the windows down, you will smell like hydrocarbons after you get out of the car and people riding beind you will not want to be friends anymore.... Kevin, I am still your friend..... If you go midpipe, you will either want a resonated mp or one with a silencer welded into it if you are going to be driving on the road. Straight pipes on FD's are nasty and they will make you deaf if you aren't careful.

BTW Where can i buy pop off valves ?i looked at rx7store.net but couldn't find them.

Can't some BOVs be setup to be used as Pop Off Valves?
